Padel is an accessible and friendly sport. But behind this image, there is a whole world of possibilities. a series of situations that all players are familiar with from beginner to professional.
Sometimes frustrating moments, often fun, which also make up the richness of this sport where communication, emotional management and small details often make the difference.
Here are 10 situations in which you will definitely recognize yourself.
The famous “leave it!”… with a ball that was finally good
This is probably one of the most common scenes on the court. Your partner confidently announces "Leave it!", convinced the ball is going out... and you decide to trust them. The result: the ball calmly falls back into the court, without anyone playing it.
A moment of hesitation, a glance exchanged… and an avoidable point that vanishes.
The perfect smash… which is countered
You did everything right: positioning, timing, power. The smash goes well, you're convinced you've won the point. But in padel, nothing is ever over.
Your opponent returns the ball to your court, sometimes more gently than expected… and you're no longer ready to continue your attack. A typical situation that reminds you that every point must be finished to the very end!
The player who sees all the balls go "out"
In matches without a referee, the handling of calls can sometimes create tension. Some players tend to call "fault" a little too quickly, even on borderline... or even good balls.
Even without malicious intent, this can quickly unbalance the match and frustrate the opponents. We've already seen fights break out on the field!
The “I have!”… followed by a mistake
You announce that you're taking the ball with conviction, you commit fully… and we'll let you imagine the rest. Glass, net, or par 5, the choice is yours!
The missed return of service
It has always been said that in padel there are no good servers, only bad returners.
This is one of the most frustrating shots, as it dictates the start of the point. A missed return is a gift to the opponent, and it's a missed opportunity to take the lead immediately.
The point lost without pressure
No decisive shots on the other side, no particular difficulty… but the point ends with an unforced error. A volley into the net, a forehand that goes wide, a poorly anticipated ball.
It is often in these moments that we realize how much padel is a sport of rigor and constant concentration.
The repeated apologies
“Sorry,” “I’m sorry,” “I’m not in it”… Some players apologize after every mistake. While it may come from a good place, it can also disrupt the flow of the game or create a negative atmosphere, especially for their teammate who may feel annoyed. This is also where the teammate's role comes in: to try to calm and reassure their partner.
In padel, attitude and mental strength are a strength, and knowing how to remain neutral can sometimes be more beneficial than verbalizing every mistake.
The lob was too short
The lob may be an attacking shot in padel, often used to get out of difficult situations, calm the game or regain the net! But when it lacks length, it becomes an immediate opportunity for the opponent.
A lob that falls short often results in a smash penalty. A mistake that's punished severely!
The drawn-out point… which ends with a silly mistake
After an intense exchange, where each player gives their all to keep the ball alive, the point ends with a simple unforced error.
This is one of the paradoxes of padel: being able to maintain your level during the rally, but faltering when it comes to finishing the point. You have to know how to manage these key moments.
The match in two parts
You start well, the feeling is good, the shots are going well… then, without really understanding why, the level drops. Less precision, more mistakes, a little less clarity.
Padel is a sport of consistency, and maintaining your level throughout a match is often more difficult than simply getting off to a good start. There are also the "diesel players" who take a little longer to get going and play well. Be careful, this can often be a disadvantage!
Ultimately, these situations are an integral part of the game. They remind us that padel is not just about technique, but also relies on communication, mental management, and the ability to stay focused over time.
And if you recognized yourself in several of these moments… it's simply because you play padel 😉
