A tournament under tension: surprise guests and favourites on the verge of collapse at the Mexico Major

The Mexico Major round of 16 featured a number of hard-fought matches and a few surprises. Here's a look back at the day's key moments.

Garcia and Barahona continue their good run

Spaniards Javi Garcia and Javi Barahona reach the quarter-finals of a Major for the first time Premier PadelThey eliminated the number 8 seeds, Javi Garrido and Lucas Bergamini, at the end of a decisive tie-break (7-5), chaining six consecutive points to conclude.

Collombon and Martinez in the quarter-finals

Alix Collombon and Araceli Martinez reach their first quarter-final in a tournament Premier Padel in 2024. They will face No. 3 seeds Bea Gonzalez and Delfi Brea.

Triay and Fernandez win in three sets

No. 2 seed Gemma Triay and Claudia Fernandez defeated No. 16 seed Marta Marrero and Ksenia Sharifova in a tight three-setter. Marrero and Sharifova were making their Major debuts together.

Sanchez and Josemaría avoid premature exit

Ari Sánchez and Paula Josemaría (seeded No. 1) were nearly upset by Alejandra Alonso and Andrea Ustero before finding their form in the third set. They will play Veronica Virseda and Aranzazu Osoro (No. 8) in the quarterfinals. After the match, Sánchez said: "In March we left with bad memories. Here, people treat us very well and it's a pleasure to play in this tournament."

Arnaldos and Torre stopped by Yanguas and Stupaczuk

Gerald Arnaldos and Agustin Torre's journey ended against Mike Yanguas and Franco Stupaczuk (n°4). The latter will meet Garcia and Barahona in the quarter-finals.

Galán and Chingotto pass by with a thought for Paquito Navarro

Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto (No. 2) overcame a difficult start to win in two sets. After the match, Chingotto paid tribute to Paquito Navarro: " It is a difficult day for a colleague and friend like Paco. We send him all our strength."

Two unseeded pairs, Garcia-Barahona and Fernandez-Jimenez, remain in contention on the men's side. Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia (No. 1) can secure the top spot in the 2024 FIP rankings if they beat Jon Sanz and Coki Nieto (No. 6).
