Arturo Coello might have one last surprise in store for Miguel Lamperti before the Argentinian's retirement. The world number one would like to share the court with the man who accompanied him at the start of his career, for a single FIP tournament. It's a symbolic idea, but with one condition: it must not disrupt his ranking with Agustín Tapia.

A few hours before the start of the Alpine Paris Major Arturo Coello remains focused on defending his place at the top of the world padel rankings. But in an interview given to the Spanish daily newspaper ASThe Valladolid player also mentioned a much more sentimental project:  to play in a tournament alongside Miguel Lamperti before the Argentinian's retirement .

One last tournament with Lamperti?

Miguel Lamperti is due to end his professional career at the end of the 2026 season. At 47 years old, the Argentinian is thus preparing to close a particularly long career marked by a popularity that far exceeds his record.

Coello is one of the players who benefited from his close relationship and experience. And the world number one has clearly not forgotten that period.

In ASThe Spaniard explains that he is considering the possibility of  play a FIP tournament with Lamperti  before his retirement. A way to pay tribute to him directly on the track.

Coello perfectly sums up the special place occupied by the Argentinian:  Lamperti was never world number 1, but his charisma gave him a comparable stature with the public.  According to him, his name might even be remembered more than that of some former number 1s.

One condition: to maintain his ranking with Tapia

However, the idea is not completely finalized.

Coello sets an important condition:  This appearance with Lamperti should not create an imbalance in the points tally between him and Agustín Tapia.

The remark is far from insignificant. The FIP ranking takes into account the  22 best results  players and Coello therefore want to wait until there are enough tournaments. Premier Padel accounted for before considering this parenthesis on the FIP Tour.

This is therefore not an announcement of a separation, even a temporary one, with Tapia. On the contrary.

Tapia? "Tapia is Tapia."

The relationship between the two men seems to go beyond the simple framework of results.

When AS When asked if Agustín Tapia could be considered the "Messi of padel," Coello preferred to avoid the comparison. For him,  Tapia must build his own story  and still has room to push the boundaries of his sport.

The numbers lend weight to these statements. Coello and Tapia still occupy the top spots in the world rankings and continue to accumulate titles. Coello, in particular, boasts...  8 titles in 2026 .

However, their season was not a smooth one.

Coello acknowledges in particular that the pair went through a more complicated period at the beginning of the season.

His explanation is interesting: after a particularly trying year in 2025,  Coello and Tapia reportedly did not receive sufficient preparation during the off-season. .

Rather than seeking a more complex explanation, the two men decided to meet in Madrid and put work back at the center of their project.

The reaction was spectacular: after several lost finals in the spring, they regained the title at the  Major of Italy before stringing together several successes. In Valencia, they notably beat Chingotto / Galán after a spectacular final won 6/7 6/1 7/6.

Coello still sees Chingotto/Galán as their main rivals

Regarding the world hierarchy, the Spanish number 1 is not changing his tune either.

For Coello, when  Tapia / Coello  If they don't win, the pair best positioned to take the titles remains  Federico Chingotto / Alejandro Galán .

However, a third team is trying to break this duel:  Juan Lebrón / Leo Augsburger .

Coello believes that this pair is now looking to establish itself in the fight at the top, but also highlights the efforts made by the top two teams to maintain their lead.

Paris and the major record labels can still wield considerable influence.

This statement takes on even greater significance when addressing the... Alpine Paris Major .

A title in a Major earns  2 000 points , compared to 1,000 for a P1. Last season, Coello and Tapia won the Paris Major and added 2,000 points to their ranking.

Coello therefore believes that the Majors can once again play a decisive role in the battle for the top spot in the world.

And the next one starts now at Roland-Garros, where  Tapia/Coello are indeed the top seeds in the men's draw .
