The bad run continues for  Lucas Bergamini and Javi Garrido The 9th seed at the Paris Major lost in their opening match against  Javier Martínez / Luis Hernández Quesada ,  6 / 1 7 / 6 , in 1 hour 33 minutes. Another poor performance for a pair who are now on a run of...  third consecutive elimination in the first round on Premier Padel .

On paper, however, the gap was significant.  Bergamini is 16th in the world, Garrido 20th , while Martínez and Hernández are respectively at  55th and 49th in the world rankings .

Garrido tense, Bergamini / Garrido overwhelmed

The first set quickly sets the tone.  Martínez / Hernández Quesada take complete control  and inflict a 6/1 on their opponents.

On the Garrido/Bergamini side, it's difficult to find serenity.  Garrido appears particularly tense He complains a lot and makes a lot of mistakes. The Spaniard, usually capable of making a huge difference with his power, can't seem to find the necessary consistency.

The second set was more closely contested, but the outcome remained similar at crucial moments. Bergamini and Garrido battled until the tiebreak, but couldn't turn the match around. Martínez and Hernández Quesada ultimately closed it out.  6 / 1 7 / 6 .

Statistics confirm the difference:  58% of points won  by Martínez/Hernández against 42% for their opponents. They also win  63% of their points in service , compared to only 48% for Bergamini/Garrido, and convert  67% of their break points , compared to 25%.

After three consecutive quarters, the fall

This latest elimination prolongs a season that has become very complicated for  Bergamini / Garrido partners since the beginning of the year.

The project had, however, started very well with  three consecutive quarter-finals This suggests that the pair could establish themselves permanently among the best on the circuit.

But then the momentum completely reversed. Round of 16 eliminations piled up, before this now worrying run of  three consecutive defeats right from their first match on Premier Padel .

Some results have shed some light on the situation, notably a  quarter-final at the Italy Major  and a title at  FIP Gold of Abidjan A trophy that's always welcome, even if the field was significantly less competitive than the one encountered every week on Premier Padel.

Is a separation back on the table?

The first warning signs didn't appear at Roland-Garros. For several weeks now,  rumors surrounding a possible separation  accompany the pair.

Bergamini and Garrido are very close off the track and have so far decided to  to maintain their project despite the poor results They are, in fact, still registered together at the  Rotterdam P2 .

But this new defeat could inevitably reignite the questions.

The problem is no longer just losing to the world's best pairs. In recent weeks, Bergamini/Garrido have been unable to get past the early rounds against opponents who, on paper, should be within their reach.

So,  Will they go all the way to the end of the season together?  Rotterdam should already provide some answers.

Has Garrido jeopardized his place with Spain?

This defeat also comes at the worst possible time for  Javi Garrido  on an individual level.

The Spanish selection for the  2026 World Cup  The race is approaching, and the last few places are far from guaranteed. The Paris Major represented one of the last big opportunities to convince.  Juanjo Gutiérrez .

Garrido exited Roland-Garros in his first match, with a difficult individual performance. Meanwhile, several players likely to be contenders for the final spots on the team continue to push for qualification.

This obviously doesn't mean that a place in the Spanish national team is decided in a single match, but rather during a period where  each result can have an impact This premature exit clearly doesn't help Garrido's situation.

Between a  third consecutive defeat in the first round With a project that has lost its momentum from the start of the season and the Spanish national team looming, the Paris Major could well represent a turning point for  Bergamini / Garrido .

Benjamin Dupouy

I discovered padel directly during a tournament, and frankly, I didn't really like it at first. But the second time, it was love at first sight, and since then, I haven't missed a single match. I'm even ready to stay up until 3am to watch a final of Premier Padel !
