A misstep had to be avoided at all costs… but that's precisely what happened. In a high-stakes semi-final at Dubai P1, Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría fell to Bea González and Claudia Fernández at the end of a 2-hour and 44-minute battle: 4/6 7/6(5) 6/3.
A defeat with serious consequences: the world number 1 is no longer in their hands.

A controlled first round… without dominating the proceedings

Sánchez and Josemaría started with their usual control. They took the first set. 6/4taking advantage of their opponents' numerous hesitations.
However, the statistics already show a very close match:

  • 50% of the points won on each side throughout the entire match,
  • same effectiveness on the first shot (57%),
  • Neither pair really gained the upper hand in service.

The tie-break that turned the match around

The second act changes tone completely: Fernandez breaks freeGonzález regains depth and the pressure shifts to the world number ones.
Sánchez/Josemaría have a few chances but only convert them 36% of their break points, against 71% for Bea and Claudia, a decisive difference.

While we usually expect a final surge from the former world ranking leaders, the third set is the one where doubts catch up with them.

  • They only earn 43% of the points returned,
  • They are no longer able to distinguish between different situations in long-distance conversations.

Opposite them, González/Fernández are in control. Without dominating statistically, they win the key games, the key sequences, the points that matter.
Final score: 6/3.
Enough to create the sensation of the day… and completely reshuffle the cards in the fight for the world throne.

In the other semi-final, Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea have perfectly done their part of the job by clearly winning against Araújo / Ustero (6/1 6/2).
A swift, controlled victory that propels them to the final with a clear mission: win to retain the world number 1 ranking.

With this defeat, Ari and Paula are no longer masters of their own destiny.To maintain their chances of being number 1 at the end of the season, they must hope for a defeat of Triay / Brea in the final.

Otherwise, the Spanish-Argentine duo will almost definitively seize the top spot in world padel.
