The Jakarta provincial government has announced a unique project: the construction of a free padel court to residents, in the heart of the Heritage Flag Park, in South Jakarta, Indonesia.
A project to democratize a still elitist sport
The governor Pramono Anung confirmed that the facility would be open to all, with no user fees, but clarified that players would need to bring their own equipment.
"We are building a padel court, which is very expensive everywhere these days. Those who want to play are free to do so, but they must bring their own equipment."
Padel is in booming in Indonesia, but remains considered a high-end sport, due to the high cost of facilities and field rentals.
A strategic location in the heart of Heritage Flag Park
Le Heritage Flag Park is a new large green space, resulting from the merger of three emblematic parks: Ayodhya , Jump et Leuser The padel court will be located there as part of a program aimed at enriching the park's sporting and cultural offerings.
Between free and tax
While the initiative aims to make padel more accessible, it comes in a particular context: the Jakarta provincial government recently introduced a 10 tax% on the use of private padel courts.
In France, this is also an important issue, private padel clubs have a 20% VAT, which partly prevents these clubs from offering more attractive prices for padel players.
For now, the construction of the land is still in the design phase. But the announcement sends a strong signal: Jakarta wants to offer its residents access to a growing sport , and this, without financial barriers.
