The argentinian Juani Mieres, former professional padel player and now coach of the pair Cardona/Augsburger, gave an interview to AnalystsPadelHe talks about his experience as a coach, his projects, as well as the separation with Javi Garrido et Martín Di Nenno.
His role as coach
Today, Juani Mieres trains the pair Cardona/Augsburger, 9th in the world, and runs his padel academy in Madrid, the Juani Mieres Pro Academy.
“It's been a tough year, with lots of tournaments and traveling. The pressure of the players, the stress of competition... It's a lot of work, but I'm very satisfied.”
In 2025, he began his second year as a coach, a period which allowed him to gain experience.
“Over the years, you learn new things. As a player, you focus on technique and tactics, but as a coach, you also have to manage the players' psychology, organize training sessions, and analyze their areas for improvement. With time and tournaments, you gain maturity and experience.”
The transition from player to coach
The transition began at the end of his career, when Juani Mieres announces his reconversion as a coach at the start of 2023 with Iván Ramírez as a first player. He formalized his retirement in August of the same year.
“Unfortunately, my decision to retire was an easy one. After five surgeries, I was about to undergo a sixth on my left leg. I was never able to get back to 100% fitness, which made training and competing very difficult. It was a forced retirement.
Today, with the academy and all the projects I have going on, I devote a lot of time to training. I don't really train myself anymore. After so many years at a high physical and technical level, I must admit that the gym no longer appeals to me at all. But I do a minimum of exercise to stay in shape.”
The separation with the Di Nenno/Garrido pair
Juani Mieres had already played alongside Javi Garrido in 2020 before becoming his coach in early 2024. However, after the first tournament of the year, the Riyadh P1, the player decides to separate from his coach. A few weeks later, the pair Di Nenno/Garrido also reportedly ended their collaboration after the tournament. Santiago.
“It was a great adventure, but maybe I wasn't at the best time in my personal life to dedicate myself to it 100%. I have enormous respect for Martin (Di Nenno), it's a phenomenon, both professionally and personally. But I felt that I wasn't able to be fully invested, so it was better to make a decision and change.
I always wanted the best for Javi and MartinToday, they continue on their path and I continue with my training and coaching projects on the circuit.”
Despite this separation, Juani Mieres continues to believe in the potential of Javi Garrido, whom he saw reaching the world number 1 spot. He does not rule out a future return to his side if the opportunity arises.
“He's a young and very talented player. I have great confidence in him, and we've always had a very good relationship. He has everything it takes to reach the top spot: motivation, ambition, and hard work.
As a coach, you never know what the future holds. If the opportunity arises to work together again, it would be a great pleasure.”
The conflict between players and governing bodies
The start of the season was marked by a great controversy, with the players' boycott after the Riyadh P1. The players of Top 100 refused to participate in the tournaments of Gijón et Cancún, before returning to the field for the Miami P1 last month.
“There are always conflicts, but it can be a good thing if it helps improve the tour and the conditions for the players. What is happening now in USA shows that this is not just a demand from a few players, but from an entire collective.
The conditions on the circuit have changed a lot. We've gone from average to very good conditions. Now we need to talk and find solutions for the future. The most important thing is for all parties to work together to move the sport forward."
