Le  Madrid P1 2026  This is definitely a unique tournament. Just a few days before...  Paris Major at Roland-Garros The men's draw, whose qualifying rounds begin on Sunday, has just experienced its biggest upset yet:  Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, seeded 1, stop in the quarter-finals .

The number 1s were beaten by  Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas (TS5)  in two sets,  7 / 5 7 / 6 This was a particularly rare elimination for a pair who had never lost at this stage of a tournament. Premier Padel from  May 2025 .

We need to go back to Asunción in May 2025

To find Coello and Tapia, who were eliminated in the quarter-finals, we need to go back to the... Asuncion P2 2025 .

In Paraguay, the number 1 seed had been surprised by  José Antonio Diestro and Juanlu Esbrí , winners after three rounds:  6/3 2/6 7/6(1) The official tournament draw confirms that Diestro/Esbrí's run was subsequently ended in the semi-finals against  Pablo Cardona / Leo Augsburger .

Since this episode,  Coello/Tapia had therefore not experienced any further eliminations in the quarter-finals on the circuit. Premier Padel .

More than fifteen months later, Nieto and Yanguas came to an end to this streak in Madrid.

Last time, Galán and Chingotto had taken full advantage of it.

And the parallel with Asunción is interesting.

During this latest premature exit of Coello and Tapia, their main competitors,  Ale Galán and Fede Chingotto had perfectly exploited the opening left in the painting.

Seeded 2nd in Paraguay, the pair had dominated  Juan Tello / Martín Di Nenno 6/0 6/2 in the semi-final before beating  Cardona / Augsburger 6/2 6/3 in the final  to leave with the title.

The official chart also shows how clearly the hierarchy was already established:  Coello/Tapia were TS1 with 38,100 cumulative points, ahead of Galán/Chingotto, TS2 with 27,980 points .

The question therefore naturally arises in Madrid:  Will Galán and Chingotto be able to take advantage of the fall of the number 1s once again?

Nieto and Yanguas bring down the bosses

But first, they had to succeed in taking down Coello and Tapia.

Et  Nieto / Yanguas  They were able to step up in the important moments. After snatching the first set  7/5 They resisted the comeback of the number 1s in a particularly close second set.

Nieto and Yanguas notably served for the match at  5/4 , before Coello and Tapia came back. In the tie-break, the number 1s even took the lead  4/2 But the 5th seed didn't give up and completely turned the tiebreak around to win.  7 points to 5  and conclude the match in two sets.

7/5 7/6: Coello and Tapia are out.

A Madrid P1 team that shatters the hierarchy

This elimination is far from being the only surprise of the week in Madrid.

Even before the quarter-finals, several important seeds had already left the tournament.  Juan Lebrón / Leo Augsburger (TS3)  were notably eliminated by  Gonza Alfonso / Tino Libaak , While  Franco Stupaczuk / Jon Sanz (TS4)  also took the door in front of  José Jiménez / Álex Arroyo .

Momo González / Lucas Campagnolo (TS8)  were also stopped by  Íñigo Jofre / Jairo Bautista .

Madrid is therefore reshuffling the cards just before one of the most important matches of the season.

A warning before Roland-Garros

The timing definitely makes this defeat even more interesting.

The  The Paris Major qualifying rounds begin Sunday, September 6th at Roland-Garros. with the main draw following immediately. Madrid was supposed to be the big rehearsal before Paris. It ultimately turned into a tournament full of surprises.

For Coello and Tapia, this elimination obviously means more recovery time before Roland-Garros. But from a sporting perspective, it primarily serves as a reminder of a reality that their dominance had almost made them forget:  The number 1s can be beaten before the final four .

And recent history now provides a little extra insight.

The last time Coello and Tapia lost in the quarter-finals on Premier PadelGalán and Chingotto had won the tournament.

It was in Asunción, in May 2025.

Fifteen months later, in Madrid, the opportunity presents itself again.
