The quarter-final between Stupaczuk / Yanguas and Garrido / Bergamini at Newgiza P2 not only offered a close duel, it also gave rise to a moment of high tension on the track. In a match between the finalists of the 2024 edition, a controversial refereeing decision in the third set sparked an altercation between mike yanguas et Lucas Bergamini .
Despite this incident, the match ultimately turned in favor of Franco Stupaczuk and Mike Yanguas who turned the game around to win 3/6, 6/3, 6/1 and reach the semi-finals in Egypt.
A highly anticipated quarter-final
The match had all the makings of one of the most evenly matched of the day. The two pairs know each other well and had already faced off in tournament final in 2024 .
After a first set won by Garrido and Bergamini , the pair Stupa / Yanguas reacted in the second set to push the match into a decisive third set.
It was in this final act that the tension rose a notch.
The point of contention
While Stupaczuk and Yanguas were leading 4-1 A contentious situation arises when Bergamini deems a serve questionable. The umpire doesn't call a fault, and the point continues. Yangas returns the ball, and Bergamini eventually hits the glass with his shot.
The Brazilian then criticized the Spaniard for not admitting the foul.
"You know, it'll weigh on your conscience. Mine's clear, Mike. You're wrong."
Yanguas did not let the remark go unanswered and replied sharply:
"Let this be the last time you speak to me like that."
The exchanges briefly become more tense on the track, before the game resumes.
Yanguas calms things down after the match
After the match, Mike Yanguas sought to downplay the incident. According to him, the decision belonged to the referee and the situation was simply one of the heated moments in a close match.
"The referee has to make a decision. It was a questionable play and we couldn't afford to lose the point."
The Spaniard also explained that the affair would leave no trace between the players.
"I'll talk to Berga and everything will be sorted out. The four of us get along very well."
Stupa and Yanguas are gaining strength
Once the episode was over, the pair led by Carlos Pozzoni clearly took control in the final set. More solid in the rallies and more aggressive in key moments, Stupaczuk and Yanguas have proceeded to conclude 6/1 in the deciding set .
A victory that opens the doors to them Newgiza P2 semi-finals , at the end of an intense match marked by a small spark of tension on the track.
