The time is starting to get long for the players of padel in Spain, and not only. The federation of padel of the Valencian Community made this clear in a press release published at the end of last week. At stake: a gradual return to normal to restart activity.

Zero contagion

“From the outset, all the recommendations of the health authorities to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have been fulfilled”, says the press release. The leaders of the regional federation believe that since the return of training and competition in 2020, the updated protocols have guaranteed the total absence of contagion.

Aware that strict monitoring was the only solution to allow them to relive, the clubs limited access to their facilities to practitioners in order to limit the accumulation of people, in particular by establishing a rotating system to ensure optimal safety and avoid clusters. As a reminder, in the 3rd Spanish city and its surroundings, more than 7000 new cases are detected every day.

Save the industry

To reward the efforts undertaken for several months, the regional federation approached the Generalitat (the autonomous government of the Valencian Community, editor's note) to study more closely the case of padel which is considered a safe sport, especially in Italy : “We must reconsider the specific characteristics: a sport that is played in doubles, without physical contact and which allows its practice from February 16 in sports facilities that respect the health protocols in force”.

Behind this demand, there is also an economic desire to relaunch the activity because the sector has been on a sensitive chord for almost a year. “In each structure, there are families who depend financially on our sport: clubs, coaches, players. So far they have all met the standards to prevent possible contagions so that our sport is completely safe ”.
