A few weeks ago, the news surprised everyone: Alix Collombon et Julieta Bidahorria decide to end their association. A separation which is quickly followed by the announcement of a new collaboration for the Lyonnaise. Indeed, the French number 1 unveils her new partner : Araceli Martinez, 24 years old and 35th player in the world.
A new project is therefore starting for Alix Collombon. At the microphone of Padel Magazine, she looks back on her separation from Argentina and her new goals alongside her brand new partner!
Some difficulties… and a phone call
Parting ways with Julieta Bidahorria was a difficult decision, because she is someone I get along very well with. Beyond the player, she is an absolutely incredible person.
This separation was my decision because Araceli [Martinez] contacted me. I weighed the pros and cons... With Julieta, there were tournaments where it was complicated but we said we would give ourselves time. Which we did, until the holidays.
There have been many positive things in our association… but also some complicated ones. So when there was this call, it changed things a little. With Araceli, we could be – for now – top seed at Roland Garros, which is not negligible.
Sometimes it goes very well off the track and then, once on the field, it doesn't go the way we want it to. We really tried to give ourselves the means but it wasn't enough.
A promising new project
I am very happy to be able to start this new project with Araceli. We are going to treat ourselves to a good week of training, starting next Monday in Madrid, to prepare for the next tournament, in Madrid.
We definitely want it to work straight away. but we are aware that the first tournaments are also used to practice. Hopefully it works straight away but we'll see!
I am satisfied with the team and I know that there will be very good communication between us... And above all, I want to give everything alongside him.
In addition, Araceli is having a great season, with several quarter-finals already this year. She plays really well, so obviously, when she contacted me, there was some thought that had to be done… as well as a decision that I made.
It was her brother who one day told her to accompany him to a padel court, since then, Gwenaëlle has never left the court. Except when it comes to going to watch the retransmission of Padel Magazine, World Padel Tour… or Premier Padel…or the French Championships. In short, she is a fan of this sport.
