Tournament Premier Padel Asunción P2 held its share of surprises. In the women's race, Gemma Triay took advantage of the defeats of Paula Josemaría and Ariana Sánchez to regain world number one, while in the men's race, favorites Coello and Tapia fell before the final. Gemma Triay reclaims the world throne
Gemma Triay had a historic day in Asunción. Qualifying for the final alongside Delfina Brea, the Spaniard took advantage of the elimination of Paula Josemaría and Ariana Sánchez to reclaim the top spot in the FIP rankings, ending the Spanish duo's 107-week uninterrupted reign.
Josemaría and Sánchez were beaten in the semi-finals by Bea González and Claudia Fernandez, two former partners who managed to find the keys (6/4 6/3). Triay and Brea then secured their place in the final with a comfortable victory against Sofia Araujo and Andrea Ustero (6/2 6/1), who were playing their first tournament together.
Asked after the match, Triay tempered the importance of the ranking: "I don't give much importance to the number 1 status, at least not before December. What matters is the level we maintain, the effectiveness of our work in training, and our ability to stick to our game plan."
In the final, scheduled for 21 p.m. (French time), Brea and Triay will be aiming for their fifth title of the year, after Gijón, Cancun, Miami, and Doha. Opposite, Bea González and Claudia Fernandez will be trying to win their first trophy of the season, having returned to the final after their retirement in Riyadh.
Coello and Tapia stopped, Augsburger and Cardona surprise
On the men's side, the surprise came with the elimination of Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, current world number 1s, beaten by José Diestro and Juanlu Esbri. However, the latter were unable to follow up, losing in the semi-final against the Argentinian pair. Leo Augsburger / Pablo Cardona.
Nicknamed the “Carburgers”, the two young players reached a final on the circuit for the first time Premier Padel, thanks to a solid success (6/4 6/4). A remarkable performance in a tournament which saw many seeded players fall.
They will face Fede Chingotto and Alejandro Galán, who dominated Martin Di Nenno and Juan Tello in two sets (6/2 6/3). Already winners in Miami and Santiago, the “Chingalán” are looking to win their sixth title of the season and further consolidate their status as the super pair of 2024.
