Yoan Boronad and Timéo Fonteny  have made it through the first round of the main draw of the  FIP Silver Côte du Midi in Narbonne , by winning against two well-known faces of French padel:  Thomas Basso and Jérémy Robert , former partners in the French Youth team. A victory with a special flavor, in a tight three-set match (6/4 6/7 6/3).

A victory against friends

The draw was not kind to the two young French players, who had hoped to meet international pairs at the start of the tournament.

“We weren't very happy when we saw the draw. Even though they're wild cards and on paper it's supposed to be a good draw, we know they're players we often face in the youth divisions. We know them very well. It's never easy playing against friends. In the FIP, we prefer to come up against foreigners, especially when we play in France,” the two players explained.

But once on the field, you had to do the work to earn the right to continue.

“We said we had to fight to play foreigners in the next round. That was the goal.”

A game with twists and turns

The match was played in three sets.  A solid first set  from Boronad / Fonteny, a  second most hooked  which they concede in the tie-break, and a  third that they manage to turn around thanks to a tactical change .

“We knew it would be close. We had already played them at the P1500 in Bandol last year, we won easily, but we lost to them at the Master TNJ in the final, with Yoan a little injured. They know the conditions here well, the ball goes out a lot, so we knew it could go to three sets.”

The turning point came in the final round.

“We were playing a lot down low, and we switched to playing higher, with more lobs. This change allowed us to break away and gain the upper hand. We continued in this direction, and it paid off.”

The Boronad Warrior

On the court,  Yoan Boronad  has once again demonstrated its intensity.

“I kind of knocked myself out. At one point, I went to get a ball on my left, and I got hit in the chin with a racket. On the bench, I was stunned, and Yannick Maurel wanted to call the physiotherapist. I also had blood on my arms. But hey… I had to fight.”

And his racket? Always faithful to his post.

" Nox is solid, it has nothing!”

On the way to the second round

After this victory,  The two young French players will face the Spanish pair Relis Ferreyra / José Manuel Ortiz , resulting from the qualifications.

“I don’t know them personally, but Yoan told me they were two good players. They beat Julien Biron and Louis Jover in qualifying. We’ll watch their match on Padel Magazine to observe them a little.”

A new challenge for the Boronad/Fonteny duo, determined not to stop there.

“That's already eight FIP points earned. But of course we don't want to stop there. We'll try to get more.”
