There will be very few French players on the Brussels P2 tracks this week. In the men's competition, only one French representative will be in the tournament: Thomas LeygueThe French number 1 will play with the Belgian Clement Geens, thanks to a wild card granted to directly integrate the main boardA logical invitation for the Franco-Belgian pair, but the observation remains surprising: no other French player is engaged, neither in qualifications nor on the waiting list, which is usually well-stocked.
A second chance for Leygue and Geens
This direct participation represents a step forward for Thomas Leygue, who had to go through qualifying in 2024 with Fran Ramirez. The duo was defeated in the first round. This year, the Frenchman therefore starts in more favorable conditions.
The same goes for Clément Geens: the Belgian also received a wild card last year, alongside Nicola Deloyer. The duo failed to advance past the first round. Both players will therefore be keen to do better in 2025.
The draw, however, offers them no respite: they will face from the start Leonel Daniel Aguirre and Gonzalo Gabriel Alfonso, two experienced players and former pillars of the A1 circuit PadelA major challenge for Geens and Leygue, who will not be favorites, but may have real ambitions.
Women: more French women involved
Among the women, the French presence is clearly more marked. Alix Collombon, associated with the Spanish Araceli Martinez, is directly in the main draw. Their first round promises to be very balanced against Carolina Orsi / Nuria RodriguezA tricky encounter, the winner of which will face in the second round the world number 1 pair, Paula Josemaría and Ariana Sánchez.
Several French women in qualifying
The qualifications will see the presence of several French players:
- Léa Godallier with Sandra Bellver, seeded No. 5
- Camille Sireix with the Dutch woman Rosalie Van Der Hoek
- Louise Bahurel et Charlotte Soubrié
- Steffi Merah et Melissa Martin, who snatch the last qualifying place with only 92 point in the ranking. A modest total that allows them to take advantage of a rare niche in this type of event. Ranked beyond the 200th place in the world, they will have the opportunity to qualify for the Brussels P2. To give you an idea, last year, the last accepted pair (excluding wild cards) was composed of Raquel Segura and Ana Domínguez, with a total of 794 points.
