La spanish pair, composed of young players Francisco Cabeza et Diego Garcia, ranked outside the world's top 150 before the Gijón final, achieved a real feat. Left to their own devices at just 17 and 18 years old, they won their first tournament Premier Padel facing the highly anticipated pair and big favorite of the tournament, Tolito Aguirre / Gonzalo Alfonso.

A historic final

They are the youngest pair to win a tournament. Premier Padel, in a particular context marked by the absence of the best players in the world from the top 100. This situation gave rise to a surprising final and the victory of a pair that no one expected at the start of the season.

The Spanish Cabeza and Garcia were able to take advantage of this context to make their way to the final, eliminating three seeded pairs from the tournament. Freed from all pressure, they won in three sets against the big favorites, the Argentinians Aguirre / Alfonso, seeded No. 3, who were aiming for a place in the world top 60 in the event of triumph at the Gijon P2.

A victory without a coach

At their young age, Cabeza and Garcia were left to their own devices in the final, without a coach since the start of the competition. A striking image: while the Argentine pair were accompanied by their coach on the bench, the two young Spaniards had no one to guide them during the change of ends, a rare scene in a final of the main circuit of the world padelDespite this handicap, they were able to react alone throughout this match with immense stakes, to finally win in three sets: 7/5 4/6 6/3.

A jump in the rankings

This unusual final, played after the boycott of the best players in the world, allowed the two pairs to make good progress in FIP ranking.

The Spanish winners of the Gijon P2 have each garnered 600 point, allowing them to earn more 100 seats : Cabeza reaches 68th place, While Garcia enters the top 85.

On their side, Tolito Aguirre and Gonzalo Alfonso, favourites for the final victory, have despite their defeat in the final accumulated 360 points each, which allows them to also integrate the Top 85 worldwide.
