Jorge “Coki” Nieto , currently 9th world player , plays alongside his Spanish compatriot mike yanguas , thus forming the 4th pair in the world . On the occasion of an interview with The House of Padel , he confides on several subjects: his coronation at Final Master , the new version of the pair Nieto/Yanguas , as well as his dream as a professional player.
His relationship with Maxi Grabiel
Maxi Grabiel , a former professional Argentinian padel player who later became a coach, trains Coki Nieto for two years and supervises the pair Nieto/Yanguas male side as well as Icardo/Jensen among the ladies.
“Above all, Maxi brings me happiness every day. He makes everything much easier; he's always smiling and he knows padel very well; he knows a lot about everything. He's been playing his whole life and has been a coach for a few years now. But what I remember most is that he's always in a good mood. He never has a bad day, and that makes everything easier.”
The pair Coki Nieto/Mike Yanguas is also accompanied by Maty Marina , next to Maxi Grabiel , to supervise the pair during this new season Premier Padel .
“I have a great relationship with Mati. I've known him for 10 years, he's a great guy, we're friends. When Mike told me, I was delighted, because I know he's a serious person who works well. And Mike, sometimes you have to give him a bit of direction, so Mati can help him with that. I think they're a very good team.”
The return of the Nieto/Yanguas pair
“I think we're both in a better phase than before. Three years ago, we were playing together, but I think we've both progressed. We've matured and we can be a better pair than we were three years ago.”
The two Spanish players remain on a promising 2024 season before their association. Coki Nieto , last winner of the Final Master last December, and mike yanguas , who won a title at the NewGiza P2 next to Franco Stupaczuk and reached three finals including two in Major ( Qatar and Mexico ), is already establishing himself as one of the best players in the world at 22 years . The two players do not start from scratch, since they were already associated in 2022 , notably winning the Challenger of Lower Aragon en World Padel Tour .
The status of 4th world pair
Coki Nieto , current 9th in the world , and mike yanguas , 7ᵉ , form the 4th world pair on the circuit Premier Padel , which allows them to avoid meeting the three world top pairs before the semi-finals A very different status from 2022 , where they were out of the Top 8 .
“Being a number 4 pair is an accomplishment for me. I don't know if I ever imagined I'd be number 4. So, from now on, I have to enjoy it and try to win as many matches as possible.”
His dream and his best memory of 2024
Before winning two titles last season , the dream of Coki Nieto was from win a tournament on the circuit Premier Padel , done with the Bordeaux P2 and the Barcelona Final Master .
“Now, it would be to be number one. But hey, it's a huge dream. That said, at the time, winning a tournament also seemed huge to me. So, I would say that.”
When asked what his best memory of last season , between :
- le Barcelona Final Master , won to everyone's surprise after saving several match points and beating the world number 1 , authors of a record season with 14 tracks ,
- and the Mondial , with a finale Spain/Argentina Where Coki Nieto was associated with Arturo Coello for the first match of the final and inflicted a crushing victory on “The Superpibes” ( 6 / 1 6 / 2 ) to lead 1 to 0 before conceding the following matches,
Coki Nieto don't hesitate:
“The Masters, without hesitation. Especially because we won it! I hesitated a little, but oh well. If we had lost, I wouldn't have cared. But winning, especially against Agus and Arturo, who were undefeated in 70 matches, was incredible.”
2025 target
“I never set specific goals for myself. If you ask Mike, he'll say, 'Win every tournament!' But I always say the important thing is to play well and win as many matches as possible. If you play well, you can win a lot of matches.”
The season of the pair Nieto/Yanguas started during the first tournament of the season Premier Padel , Riyadh P1 , where they reached the semi-finals when faced with your dog's world number 1 .
