Cryotherapy has developed a lot in recent years, particularly in the world of sport. Today, many high-level sports use this method to recover from their efforts, and to prevent the risk of injury.

What is cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is basically the application of cold as a method of recovery in order to take advantage of its therapeutic benefits.

In France, Insep has been equipped with cryotherapy devices since 2009. Whole body cryotherapy is used by athletes to recover better after exertion and improve their performance. It would reduce the feeling of fatigue and allow the relaxation of tense muscles.

To fight against chronic pain, some people resort to cryotherapy sessions in specialized centers, but these treatments are not recognized.

How to use cryotherapy for recovery in sports?

Currently, there are huge booths called criosauna that are necessarily supervised by professionals (especially controlling the temperature) by applying the cold by nitrogen vapor.

Another option when you do not have access to this type of cabins, which is quite common, are the ice-cold water baths (make yourself a bath by adding a good amount of ice cubes, and just introduce your legs).

It is important that water never reach the visceral region of your body (the line above your waist).

What is cryotherapy used for?

The four main effects of cryotherapy are:

  • An anti-inflammatory effect: rest assured, there is no better than ice. The baths in the ice water tub will help you avoid inflammation of the tendons.
  • A vasoconstrictor effect: it is a fact that the veins will contract at first. Then in a second, (after two minutes), the waste produced by your effort will be directed to the organs that will expel them, helping to better recover.
  • A neuromotor effectIt influences our nervous system by inducing muscle relaxation.
  • An analgesic effectCryotherapy will help us to have no pain, internal either by changes of rhythm or by blows.

Advantages of cryotherapy in sport

  • Better rest and recuperation after the effort (whether in the case of a training or a match in competition).
  • Less overload effect: after several days of training, fatigue and its effects do not accumulate.
  • Decreased muscle and tendon injuries
