This Sunday in Almaty, Thomas Leygue and the Swede Daniel Windahl (seeded 2) played an intense final against the pair of seeded 1, Jaime Munoz and Ignacio Vilariño Gestoso. Despite a strong resistance, the Franco-Swedish duo lost after a three-set match (6/7 6/4 6/4).
A first set hung
From the start of the match, both teams displayed a high level of play. Each pair easily won their service games. 5/6, Munoz and Vilariño get two set points, but Leygue and Windahl manage to save the day, pushing the set to tie-breaker.
In this decisive game, the Frenchman and the Swede quickly took the upper hand, thanks in part to a few unforced errors from Vilariño, who was visibly frustrated at not having concluded earlier. Leygue and Windahl dominated the rally and took the first set.
A renewed intensity for Munoz and Vilariño
Hit but not sunk, the Spaniards reacted in the second set. They increased their intensity and managed to break at 2/2, thus taking the advantage. Behind, they did not give up and maintained their lead to finally conclude with the score of 6/4.
The scenario repeated itself in the third set. Munoz and Vilariño stepped up the pace again and secured a crucial break at 2/2The Franco-Swedish team tried to come back, but the Spanish were solid in the important moments and closed the set with a new 6/4.
Encouraging signs for Leygue and Windahl
Despite the defeat, this final remains a good result for Leygue and Windahl, who were competing in their first competition together. Facing an experienced pair like Munoz and Vilariño, they demonstrated a solid level of play and came close.
I discovered padel directly during a tournament, and frankly, I didn't really like it at first. But the second time, it was love at first sight, and since then, I haven't missed a single match. I'm even ready to stay up until 3am to watch a final of Premier Padel !
