Professional padel is exploring a whole new territory this week. For the first time, the Albania hosts a major international competition with the FIP Platinum Albania , organized in the very heart of Tirana , on the mythical Skanderbeg Square transformed for the occasion into a veritable open-air arena.
With several stars of the world circuit present, a substantial prize purse, and valuable FIP points to be won, this Platinum event confirms one thing above all: the circuit FIP continues to take on an increasingly important dimension in the global padel ecosystem.
A spectacular tournament in the heart of Tirana
Du 26 to 30 may The Albanian capital is becoming one of the world's padel centers. Four outdoor courts have been installed in the heart of the city's historic center, with completely free access for the public.
The setting inevitably evokes certain events that have become iconic in recent years, such as the Plaza Mayor of Valladolid or even the main square of Krakow during the 2023 European Games.
The main draw begins this week with the round of 16 scheduled for Wednesday before the finals on Saturday.
Stupa / Yanguas, the presence that changes everything
The main attraction of the tournament remains, of course, the presence of Franco Stupaczuk et mike yanguas , currently fourth in the world pair.
Seeing a pair of this caliber enter a FIP tournament outside of Premier Padel remains extremely rare and perfectly illustrates the growing importance of Platinum tournaments in the strategy of top players.
But they won't be the only big names in Tirana. The tournament will also feature:
- Jon Sanz / Coki Nieto
- Martín Di Nenno / Jairo Bautista
- Javi Leal / Fran Guerrero
- Edu Alonso / Aimar Goñi
- as well as several highly competitive associations in the secondary circuit.
In the women's competition, the table will be led by Alejandra Salazar et Alejandra Alonso , number 1 seeds, ahead Marina Guinart / Veronica Virseda .
The overall level is expected to be particularly high, with no less than 14 players from the FIP top 30 present in the female category.
300 FIP points and a huge strategic stake
Beyond the prestige, this tournament primarily represents a very good financial opportunity for the players.
The winners will leave with 300 FIP points as well as a significant share of the total prize money 150 000 euros .
For comparison, a Premier Padel P2 distributes 600 points to the winner. The Albanian Platinum therefore offers half the points of a tournament Premier Padel… with often much less media pressure and sometimes more open scenarios.
This is precisely what makes these tournaments increasingly attractive to many of the world's top pairs.
The FIP circuit now offers an interesting balance between exposure, points, and sporting opportunities. And in a context where the debate surrounding the points system has been particularly prominent in recent weeks, this type of tournament becomes strategic in building a season.
A tricky start for several big pairs
The first round of FIP Platinum Albania will already offer several very interesting posters to follow from the Tirana side.
The big favorites Franco Stupaczuk et mike yanguas , the number 1 seed, will have to be wary of a far from innocuous opening match against José Diestro et Ignatius Piotto A pair capable of playing a very aggressive style of padel, especially in potentially fast outdoor conditions on Skanderbeg Square.
One of the highlights of the day will undoubtedly be the new partnership between Martín Di Nenno et Jairus Baptist On paper, the pair possesses a great deal of quality and could quickly become dangerous in this tournament. Their first match is against the qualifiers. Naranjo / Sanchez Vicente will already allow us to observe the first automatic responses.
Another particularly interesting duel: Jon Sanz / Coki Nieto salary. David Gala / Enzo Jensen This match could be much closer than it seems. Gala and Jensen remain two young players capable of imposing a great deal of intensity, while Sanz and Nieto will have to quickly assert their status.
Finally, many eyes will be on the brand-new pair. Maxi Arce / Álex Arroyo A surprising alliance, which will pit them against each other from the first round. Garrido / Bergamini (TS5) Between Arce's creativity and Arroyo's power, this experimental pair could clearly become one of the tournament's attractions if they quickly find their footing.
