“The ranking today doesn't matter... we'll see in December.”  This is what he declared  Gemma Triay  after qualifying for the final of the  Premier Padel Asunción P2 , in a measured speech. However, the facts are there:  The Minorca player is back in the world number one spot , a little over two years after leaving her.

An opportunity seized... thanks to a defeat of   Josemaría / Sanchez

Triay owes this return to the top not only to his excellent consistency with  Delfi Brea , but also to a surprise in the other part of the painting. Indeed,  Paula Josemaría and Ariana Sánchez , number 1 before the tournament, were beaten in the semi-final by  Bea González and Claudia Fernández  on the score of  6 / 4 6 / 3 A defeat that costs the Spanish duo dearly, because it allows Gemma Triay to  take back sole leadership of the FIP women's ranking .

Since  May 15th 2023 , this throne was shared between Ari and Paula. But in 2025, the situation changes:  Gemma takes over the reins , rewarded by high-level consistency with Delfi Brea.

The consistency of an impressive duo

Seven consecutive finals ,  four titles in 2025  and growing dominance in major competitions: Triay and Brea form  the most dangerous pair on the circuit today . In the semi-final, against  Sofia Araújo and Andrea Ustero , they delivered a recital (6/2 6/1), leaving no chance to their opponents. Their coach,  Rodri Ovide , even spoke of a  “match to be supervised” .

Their solid and aggressive style of play is starting to take its toll, and  the Spanish-Argentine duo  seems more than ever ready to aim for the throne throughout the season.

A personal revenge for Gemma Triay

This return to the top is also a revenge. Since his publicized separation with  Alejandra Salazar Gemma has been through some difficult times, facing criticism and questioning. But she never stopped believing. Today,  the field proves him right , and this is where it expresses itself best:  raised fist, racket in hand, on the   the land .

And even if she claims that “ranking doesn’t matter”, it's a safe bet that this new number 1 status will have a very special flavor.

Benjamin Dupouy

I discovered padel directly during a tournament, and frankly, I didn't really like it at first. But the second time, it was love at first sight, and since then, I haven't missed a single match. I'm even ready to stay up until 3am to watch a final of Premier Padel !
