In this final of FIP STAR Cagliari in Italy, we had the right to a great performance from our French, Laura Clergue and Léa Godallier opposite Alicia Blanco and Ariadna Cañellas. Unfortunately no victory in a final which seemed within their reach.

A good match with some regrets?

Even if the French pair played against in this final, we saw that it didn't take much to tip the scales. Perhaps it would have been necessary to be less generous on certain exchanges in the second set to transform the try after winning the first set.

In the first set, Laura Clergue and Léa Godallier maintain a high level of play against the Spanish. Despite the break at 2 everywhere in favor of Cañellas / Blanco, the French managed to quickly return to the game and ultimately win this set 6/4.

The Spaniards accelerate in the second set and manage to erase some unforced errors. It requires Clergue / Godallier, extra effort to deal with the onslaught from Blanco / Cañellas. He may have missed at times a touch of aggression to push back the Spanish.

However, we never felt the French really behind. We would have liked to see Léa Godallier try to surprise a little more with her backhand volley. It was indeed perfect on the right by limiting mistakes. She hurt when it was possible. But she did not manage to take up more space on the field. Especially since Laura Clergue was in great demand on this match.

Léa Godallier's paw not sufficiently exploited

Tactically, Léa Godallier's diagonal was not used enough. The pressure was clearly on the shoulders of Laura who had a good match, as always by putting physical in the exchanges but the Spaniards were able to take the net faster and make Laura fall back. Lea should perhaps have pushed fate by going to help her teammate. Even if it's never easy for a right-handed person playing on the right

In the 3rd set, the Spanish continue to be more regular than the French, but above all more enterprising. At the end of the match, they clearly show that they are betting on aggressiveness to complete this match. A winning option.

The Spanish finally won this math in 3 sets: 4/6 6/2 6/3

For Laura Clergue and Léa Godallier, it remains a great adventure in Italy before the Sardinian Open (circuit of the World Padel Tour). There was certainly something to be done against the Spaniards, but the good news is the ever higher level and the potential that we can see against top 50/40 players.

Our French people are gaining in confidence and it is no coincidence that we see them more and more often entering the main draw of the World Padel Tour.
