Thomas Leygue et Ignatius Piotto put on an XXL performance to take out qualifying pair Ramiro Valenzuela and Pol Hernandez. In a match that seemed even at first glance, Thomas and Ignacio were able to get the best out of their game to come out on top in two sets: 7/6(6) 6/2 in 1h36 of play.
Thomas Leygue is therefore the first Frenchman to qualify for the second round of the Greenweez Paris Major, after the elimination of Vanbauce / Joris first rotation, then Dylan Guichard and Clément Geens just after.
The “Thomas Leygue Show”
Thomas Leygue clearly stood out in the first round with a very high level of play, transcended by the French public who pushed behind this Franco-Argentine pair. The French number 1 was notably able to pull off two incredible defensive shots, including a behind the back like Tolito Aguirre, to save a game ball.
The Piotto/Leygue pair offered themselves several break points in the first set and managed to convert one, in the first game, before being unbroken. However, in the fifth game, the duo managed to recover the lost break.
At 5/3, the Franco-Argentine duo had four set points, on the service of Pol Hernandez, always well defended by the finalists of the FIP Rise Bandol. Opportunities that could have cost the Piotto / Leygue pair, who were caught up in the first set and who had to go into a tie-breaker decisive.
In this final game, Thomas and Ignacio once again had a new break point, well defended by the young Hernandez / Valenzuela… Then, finally on their service, Thomas Leygue and Ignacio Piotto got themselves yet another opportunity for a set, finally converted by the Franco-Argentine duo!
The Leygue / Piotto confirmation
The second set started at the same pace as the first, with great intensity in each shot played by the Leygue / Piotto pair. A bit like the middle of the second set, Thomas Leygue and Ignacio Piotto proposed more things on the ground, making it difficult for the qualifying pair.
The break came quickly, forcing Pol Hernandez and Ramiro Valenzuela to try more complicated things, which obviously pushed them to make many more mistakes.
There was also a slight alert on the side of the Argentinian Valenzuela who had to call the physiotherapist for a discomfort contracted at the thigh level. The meeting did not stop there and the Leygue / Piotto pair continued to press where it hurt!
At 5/2, Ramiro Valenzuela's serve, Thomas and Ignacio had their first match point... Like the second set, it was perfectly defended by their young opponents. The second, however, on a very big point from the Franco-Argentine pair, was the right one... and propelled Thomas Leygue and Ignacio Piotto to the second round of the Greenweez Paris Major!
The duo will therefore play again on Wednesday against the winners of the match between Juan Lu Esbri / Xisco Gil and Javier Barahona and Teo Zapata.
The first round of the Greenweez Paris Major continues on the Philippe-Chatrier. Next up, the first women's poster opposing Jessica Ginier / Carla Touly to Marta Talavan / Julieta Bidahorria.
It was her brother who one day told her to accompany him to a padel court, since then, Gwenaëlle has never left the court. Except when it comes to going to watch the retransmission of Padel Magazine, World Padel Tour… or Premier Padel…or the French Championships. In short, she is a fan of this sport.
