Harold Mayot won the Junior Australian Open today. Aged 17, the young Tricolore, licensed at ASPTT Metz (Grand Est League), won the final against his compatriot Arthur Cazaux, licensed at TC Saint-Gély-du-Fesc (Occitanie league), in two sets (6-4 6-1). The two players had the privilege of playing their first final of Grand Chelem on the Rod Laver Arena, the center court of the Australian Open. It was the first 100% French final in Grand Chelem since 2004 (she had then opposed, already in Melbourne, Gaël Monfils and Josselin Ouanna).

Harold Mayot, currently 3e world in the junior ranking, is thus the first Frenchman since Alexandre Sidorenko in 2006 to win the junior title in the Grand Chelem Australian. Thanks to this victory, he will occupy the 1st place in the world junior ranking next Monday. The protege of Thierry Tulasne, who took the opportunity to win the best title of his young career, becomes the sixth tricolor player to register his name in the prize list of this event.

The results of this junior boy tournament are exceptional for French tennis. While there were seven Frenchmen competing in this event, three young tricolors managed to climb into the semi-finals (Timo Legout bowed to Harold Mayot at this stage of the competition). It was a first since 2002 in Melbourne (that year, Clément Morel, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet had reached the last four).

These excellent results are added to the good overall performance of French juniors. 12 tricolor players are indeed present this week in the top 100 of the junior classification (boys).

“On behalf of the DTN of the French Tennis Federation, I would like to congratulate Harold Mayot for this magnificent title. I also salute the performances of Arthur Cazaux and Timo Legout, who achieved a remarkable career during this Australian Open 2020. I take this opportunity to thank all the people involved in their preparation and supervision. Even if there is still a long way to go, these excellent results, combined with those obtained in recent years on the junior circuit by Clara Burel and Diane Parry, world junior n ° 1, turn out to bode very well for the future of French tennis. . The junior plan of the “Agir et Gagner” program, co-constructed by the teams of the National Technical Department and those of the Territories involved in the field, is thus bearing fruit. This reinforces us in the ambitious choices we have made ”, explained Pierre Cherret, National Technical Director of the FFT.
