La last appearance of Juan Tello dates back to this week, on the central track of the P1 in Madrid. Faced with the modest Spanish pair of Miguel Benítez and Alberto Cepero (65th and 48th in the world rankings), Tello and Belasteguin suffered a stinging defeat : 6/4, 6/1, in just over an hour of play. At the end of the match, Juan Tello remained prostrate on his chair long minutes, staring into space...

Only one semi-final this season… on a P2

Where has Juan Tello gone? The question is becoming more and more pressing. Now out of the top 16 of the FIP ranking (a first since 2018), the Córdoba native presents a mixed results : 16 wins for 13 losses this year. The results of "El Gato" look like a slow but inexorable tumble. This season, he has been eliminated more often in the round of 2 than he has reached the quarter-finals. His only significant result is a semi-final played in June at the PXNUMX in Bordeaux. However, This result seems misleading : during this tournament, the first four seeds were absent… In reality, Juan Tello's last convincing performance dates back to more than a year ago, with a final played against Coello/Tapia at the WPT Malaga Open, alongside Alex Ruiz.

Too many projects in two years?

"El Gato" is what he called lost by multiplying projects ? In any case, it is undeniable that his troubles began after his separation with Federico Chingotto. In October 2022, against all expectations, Tello announced that he was joining Paquito Navarro. Their collaboration would not last only a few months : March 15, 2023, the pair announces his separation, after being eliminated in the round of 16 of Premier Padel Qatar. Paquito's repositioning on the right did not give the expected results, despite winning a title at the 2022 Mexican Open (against Pablo Lima and Franco Stupaczuk).

Mixed collaboration with “Captain America”… then with Bela

In the spring of 2023, Juan Tello will embark on a new project with Alex Ruiz. Promising on paper, this association delivers a mixed season, but the two players decide to continue the adventure in 2024. However, it will be short duration : in March 2024, Fernando Belasteguin contacts Tello to propose playing together. King Bela sees in "El Gato" the ideal gunner to end his career in style. To do this, the "boss" goes back to the right, like when he played with Agustin Tapia. Unfortunately, the results are not up to par. expectations: this season, the Tello/Bela pair is struggling to shine, as evidenced by their recent defeat in the first round of P1 in Madrid.

Assets to be revalued… and confidence to be restored

Did Juan Tello get lost in multiplying projects? This could explain his current malaise, which is noticeable when you see him on the track. However, not everything in his game is to be thrown away. statistics Padel show that his smash efficiency remains an asset this season: 17 winning smashes out of 27 attempts on average per match, i.e. a success rate of 63%, which places him among the best on the circuitt. The major problem remains the unforced errors and a lack of inspiration, a symptom of a confidence at half mast.

And if the key to reconquest passed through a project finally stable? That's all the harm we can wish on Juan Tello.
