Independent players… but not entirely free? The surprising rule of Premier Padel

The rule Premier Padel 2026 holds a few surprises. And one of the most interesting concerns neither the prize money, nor the ranking points, nor the format of the matches.

It directly concerns the possibility for players to participate in other competitions or exhibitions near a tournament Premier Padel.

One provision does indeed provide for a genuine a 200-kilometer protection zone around the cities hosting a stage of the circuit with a period that starts 40 days before the tournament and continues for 30 days after.

A particularly broad rule… but one which is not without equivalent in professional sport, particularly in tennis.

The text is explicit.

By registering and being accepted into a tournament Premier Padel, a player agrees not to participate in a championship, tournament, similar sporting event or exhibition organized in the same city as the tournament Premier Padel or unless 200 kilometers of it.

This restriction applies during the 40 days before the start of the tournament and the 30 days after its end .

The same provision appears in the 2026 women's regulations.

However, be aware of an important nuance: this obviously does not mean that a player cannot participate in any competition for 70 days.

It's about a territorial restriction , within a radius of 200 kilometers around the tournament concerned, and relating to events falling within the categories provided for by the regulations.

Premier Padel must also be a priority

The regulation adds a second obligation.

When a competition, tournament, similar sporting event or exhibition coincides with a tournament Premier Padel, tournament Premier Padel must be a priority .

The player must then participate in the stage Premier Padel concerned and decline the event organized by the third party.

Premier Padel It therefore protects its calendar in two ways: by giving priority in the event of direct competition and by providing geographical protection around its tournaments.

A window that can cover 70 days

It is primarily the scale of this protection that is striking.

Between the 40 days preceding the tournament and the 30 days following it, the window stipulated by the regulations reaches 70 days, to which must naturally be added the duration of the tournament itself .

Let's take a fictional example.

If a step Premier Padel is organised in Madrid, a player registered for this competition could not, under the conditions referred to in this provision, participate in an exhibition located 50 kilometres from Madrid three weeks before the tournament.

The economic objective seems fairly easy to understand: to prevent a competing event from using the same players in the same region shortly before or after a stage Premier Padel.

The ATP also has its own 160-kilometer rule

Based on the figures alone, Premier Padel therefore provides protection geographically wider by 40 kilometers and a period preceding the tournament longer by 10 days .

But there is a major difference with ATP.

However, the comparison needs to be qualified.

The ATP 2026 regulations expressly state that this provision does not apply to players outside the reference Top 30 referred to as "Commitment Players" within this regulatory framework.

In other words, we cannot say that all ATP players are subject to this 160 kilometer restriction.

The ATP also provides for the possibility for an affected player to request an exemption to the CEO of the ATP or his representative except in certain cases expressly excluded by the regulations.

And what about the ATP 250s?

Here again, a clarification is necessary.

For ATP 250 tournaments, the ATP regulations also provide protection for 160 kilometers or the same geographic market , but only during the tournament period including qualifications and main draw.

Therefore, we are not in the same 30-day window before and after applicable to Masters 1000, ATP 500 and ATP Finals.

This mainly shows that the ATP adapts the level of protection according to the category of the tournament.

Premier Padel adopts a different approach here since the arrangement of the 200 kilometers / 40 days / 30 days is formulated in general terms for tournaments Premier Padel in the relevant passage.

A rule that is ultimately less exceptional than it seems.

At first glance, preventing a player from participating in certain events within a 200-kilometer radius during such a long period may seem spectacular.

However, a comparison with tennis shows that the principle of a Territorial protection around major professional competitions already exists elsewhere .

What sets Premier Padel is primarily the scope provided for by its regulations: 200 kilometers and 40 days before the tournament , compared to 160 kilometers and 30 days for the comparable arrangement concerning in particular the Masters 1000 and ATP 500.

A rule that could become more important with the development of padel

Today, this provision remains relatively discreet.

But the landscape of professional padel is changing rapidly. Exhibitions, private competitions, and new formats could potentially attract top players outside the traditional calendar.

The more these events multiply, the more this rule of 200 kilometers could become important.

In any case, it reveals something very concrete about the strategy of Premier Padel : the circuit does not only protect the dates listed on its calendar.

It also protects a territory and a period surrounding each of its events .
