The second day of the BNL Italy Major Premier Padel offered its share of spectacle and twists and turns to the Foro Italico from Rome. The surprise of the day came from the pair Nacho Sager et Lucas Campagnolo, which brought down one of the tournament favorites, Cardona/Augsburger, seeded number 8, on center court.
The Spanish-Brazilian duo, ranked 53rd and 30th respectively in the FIP rankings, showed composure to win in two close rounds, 7 / 6 7 / 5, at the end of a match controlled from start to finish. A great performance against a pair who had reached the final of the P2 in Asuncion.
Just before them, Chingotto et Galan got their title defense off to a perfect start. The two partners didn't falter in their opening match and had Valdes/Collado on the score of 6 / 2 6 / 3. They will face a pair from the qualifications this Thursday: Perino/Huete, fished out at the last minute in the main draw.
But it is in the evening that the public of the Pietrangeli was able to feast its eyes on the entrance of the number 1 seeds: Arturo Coello et Agustin Tapia. Opposed to the brothers Nuno and Miguel Deus, the two men delivered a recital of power and regularity to win 6 / 2 6 / 1 in just over an hour. They will find Diestro/Esbri in the next round, with a view to revenge for their elimination in Asuncion.
As for the other favorites, Juan lebron et Franco Stupaczuk, now united under the colors of the 3rd seed, also validated their ticket for the second round without incident against Ayats/Garcia Rodrigo (6 / 3 6 / 2). On the other hand, the task was more complicated for Nieto/Yanguas (4), who had to fight three sets to overcome Zapata/Jimenez (6/2 3/6 6/3).
In the women's competition, the favorites are still waiting for their entry into the competition, scheduled for this Thursday, including: Sanchez / Josemaria, Brea/Triay, Gonzalez/Fernandez et Araujo/Ustero. In the meantime, the finalists of the 2024 edition, Lucia Sainz et Patty Llaguno, started their tournament perfectly by conceding only four games against Bellver/Rodriguez (6 / 2 6 / 2).
The other seeded players involved this Wednesday also responded: Ortega/Alonso (5), Salazar/Virseda (6) et Icardo/Jensen (8) all qualified without fear.
This Thursday marks the start of the decisive phase of the tournament with the entry of the best players. The atmosphere is heating up at the Foro Italico, and the stands promise to be packed for the big matches to come.
