A series of poor results dropped Juan Tello to 17th in the latest FIP rankings. After reaching the heights alongside Fede Chingotto, Tello had not been out of the top 16 since 2018. This decline is evident both on the pitch and in the rankings.
Tello's best recent result is a semi-final at P2 in Bordeaux. However, this result is somewhat misleading, as the world's top four pairs were not present. Apart from this performance, the results are disappointing: in 2024, Tello has only reached the quarterfinals five times in twelve attempts. Worse still, the Bela/Tello pair was eliminated in the first round in Finland last month, which is clearly insufficient for a player of his level.
Where does the drop in performance come from?
The reduction in performance of Tello is directly linked to its separation of Chingotto. Since he decided to leave his historic partner, Tello has no longer enjoyed the same success. His first association with Paquito Navarro brought a title but did not last, leading to separation. With Álex Ruiz, the observation was similar: the association did not work.
Tello now plays with Fernando Belasteguín, whose results are also mixed. Belasteguín is in his final year on the professional circuit, which adds a new dimension of uncertainty for Tello, who will likely have to find a new partner for the 2025 season.
Despite these difficulties, Tello remains an influential player on the pitch. The statistics of Padel Intelligence shows that he is one of the players who attempts the most smashes and that he succeeds in a high percentage of these attempts.
The contrast with Chingotto
The contrast with his former partner is striking. Since joining forces with Ale Galán, Chingotto is enjoying the best time of his career. The Chingotto-Galán pair are now fighting for supremacy in the world rankings. Both players have been making finals and victories since the spring, showing very positive results.
