La International Federation of Padel (FIP) announces Spain vs Argentina in years when there are no World Cups. Um… No, correction, it reveals for 2025 a new intercontinental competition who will oppose the Americas à Europe. Inspired by popular formats of the Laver Cup in tennis and Ryder Cup In golf, this competition will bring together the best players from each continent.
On the surface, it is a Europe-Americas confrontation, but in reality, one can easily imagine that the event is mainly oriented towards a duel between spain et argentina. With these two nations dominating the world padel, this biennial competition could establish itself as an unofficial “Spain vs Argentina”, ensuring fans see the two great powers of padel face off without waiting for the World Championships, which only take place every two years.
Le format and settlement exact details remain to be confirmed, but the FIP has not hidden its inspiration. By taking up the broad outlines of the Ryder Cup and Laver Cup, the Federation offers a tournament much more lucrative than the World Championships, with a endowment de 700 000 €, shared between only two teams, unlike the 500 000 € distributed between the 31 teams present at World Championship finals.
And even look at the poster: Tapia / Brea (Argentina) vs Coello / Sanchez (Tapia). It couldn't be clearer. We could have a mixed match.
This project recalls previous initiatives, such as the Reserve Cup, which was testing a format of draft where the captains took turns choosing their players from a limited selection, and the World Padel Tour who had also set up a format Europe vs Americas.
