The FIP announced today with great fanfare the 2025 Intercontinental Cup, baptized the FIP Intercontinental Cup, which will be held at London from July 25 to 27, 2025. If this is indeed the first edition under the FIP era / Premier Padel, this format of confrontation between continents is far from being a real novelty.
In other sports like tennis or golf, this type of event is already well established. Padel is directly inspired by the Laver Cup, a tennis competition created in 2017, which pits the team against each other Europe to the team Monde (and not only in America, even if the majority of players outside Europe are often American or South American). This format itself takes up the codes of the famous Ryder Cup golf, born in 1927.
But even in the world of padel, this concept has already been implemented. The competition America vs. Europe was born in 2021, and the first edition had been won by the American team. On this occasion, a French player, Bastien Blanqué, had represented the European team.
It will be interesting to see if the FIP will recall that America won the first edition of this type of confrontation. For the time being, the international body and Premier Padel offer above all a new name, but the format, itself, has nothing innovative. Especially since a similar competition had already been held in Sweden, with the same spirit.
En next july, this Intercontinental Cup should in any case offer a very high-level show, with the elite of world padelThe big question remains the national diversity selected players. The promotional poster already highlights a duel Spain vs Argentina, in the continuity of the last World Championships in Qatar. In reality, the FIP is mainly seeking to to promote this Spain/Argentina rivalry, very popular and appreciated by padel fans around the world.
