According to the words of ANIP (Spanish Association of Installations of Padel), there is no direct correlation between the Covid and the closure of more than a hundred clubs in padel in 2020. According to Jorge Munoz, president of the ANIP, what is at the origin of these closures is mismanagement (operational or financial) on the part of the leaders.

In 2020, the first decrease in the number of clubs from padel in Spain since 2014. A drop that coincides with the pandemic. But the Covid is not the main cause according to Munoz.

Indeed, he asserts that ”The pandemic will have pointed the finger at clubs with fragile health, but from my experience, and without knowing all the cases in detail, the vast majority of club closures padel are the result of wrong moves or other circumstances. If there are those for whom the only responsible is the pandemic, it is really a minority ”.

Jorge Munoz president ANIP Padel

The owner of the Get Indoor center Padel, with nine runs in Getafe, sees it unlikely that clubs that did not have a cash flow situation “Complicated” before the pandemic can close because of the Covid-19. “Those who were doing well before March 2020 were able to last two or three months without a problem."he insists.

Improve customer service

According to the president of Anip, even if the padel is a sport on the rise in recent years in Spain, two main factors are those that will mark the success or failure of these clubs: “The attention paid to customers is the element that makes you gain or lose customers and, consequently, income”.

Despite a slight decline in Spain last year, the number of clubs padel has only increased over the past decade. In 2011, for example, there were only 508, more than double today. The fact that the number of clubs has doubled in ten years implies greater competition and therefore the need to offer better service.

Without risk of overbidding

The exponential increase in demand for padel compensates, according to President Munoz, the growth in the number of padel, so that it does not foresee, in the short term, a possible overproduction of facilities for this sport. “It's too early to talk about it”he says.

The presence of more and more children, but also adults who have tried the padel as an alternative to other sports, will work in favor of the resumption of the increase. “I think we will continue to grow”, he predicts.
