A week later, there they are again. Gemma Triay / Delfi Brea et Claudia Fernandez / Martina Calvo will face off again in the final, this time at London Premier Padel P1 .
In Pretoria, the young Spanish women came within a few points of their first title together. Defeated 6/2 6/7 7/6 They had seriously shaken the world's number ones. This time, they arrive with a second chance, and perhaps more weapons to go all the way.
In Pretoria, experience had made the difference
For their very first tournament together, Fernandez and Calvo had already made a strong impression by reaching the final of the Pretoria P1.
However, their start to the match against the number 1 teams had been difficult. Triay and Brea had quickly taken control to clinch the first set 6/2 .
But what followed showed the full potential of the new Spanish pair.
Fernandez and Calvo had raised their level, saved themselves from several difficult situations, and won the second set in a tiebreak. In the third set, they continued to go toe-to-toe with the best players in the world until another tiebreak.
A few details had ultimately made the difference. Two bajadamissed opportunities in the tie-break had allowed Triay and Brea to gain the advantage and prevail.
Experience had spoken, but Fernandez and Calvo had clearly come very close.
A second final in just two tournaments
One week later, the confirmation is already there.
For their second tournament together Fernandez and Calvo have reached another final. And their London run confirms that Pretoria was not just a flash in the pan.
In the semi-finals, they notably met Paula Josemaría / Bea González which they had already beaten the previous week. And they did it again with authority: 6 / 2 6 / 4 .
A complete performance which, above all, allows them to reach the final with a lot of confidence.
Is physical freshness an advantage for Fernandez/Calvo?
This is perhaps one of the major differences compared to Pretoria.
Fernandez and Calvo completed their semi-final in two sets , While Triay and Brea spent more than three hours on the track against Ari Sánchez and Andrea Ustero.
The number 1s had to dig deep into their reserves to win. 7/6 5/7 6/3 at the end of a completely crazy match.
As they prepare for another final, the physical freshness could therefore clearly favor the young Spanish women.
Triay and Brea know how to win these matches
But beating the number 1s in the final is another story.
Just yesterday, Triay and Brea demonstrated their ability to survive when everything seems to be slipping away from them. 5/1 in the first set , then caught while serving for the game in the second, they still found the resources needed to win.
That was precisely what had made the difference in Pretoria: experience and managing important moments .
Fernandez and Calvo now know they can compete. The question is whether they will be able to capitalize on their opportunities this time.
The first title in only the second tournament?
The stakes are high for Claudia Fernandez and Martina Calvo .
Two tournaments together, two finals, and already another opportunity to clinch their first joint title .
Opposite them, Triay and Brea are playing their fourth consecutive final and will want to confirm their number 1 status once again.
Pretoria was decided by just a few points. In London, Fernandez and Calvo arrive fresher and confident that they can upset the established order.
Now all that remains is to finish the job.
I discovered padel directly during a tournament, and frankly, I didn't really like it at first. But the second time, it was love at first sight, and since then, I haven't missed a single match. I'm even ready to stay up until 3am to watch a final of Premier Padel !
