Luis Hernandez Quesada delivered a superb match alongside Íñigo Jofre, winning in three sets (6/3, 3/6, 7/6) against the Madrid P6's 1th seed, Alex Ruiz / Javier Garrido. For the young Spaniard, this equals his best performance in a P1 tournament so far. Before tackling his next match against the number 12 seed, Esbri / Bergamini, we took a look back with Luis at his journey, his work on the mental level and the reasons for his high level of play.
More airy, it wins!
“This is my best result so far in a P1 tournament. I had also reached the round of 1 at P2022 Milan in 12, but I had not beaten such a high seed. I had won against the 13th or 8th seeded pair in the tournament, but I had never beaten a top XNUMX pair before.
What I have improved the most in my game in recent months is a bit of everything related to the aerial game, the "rulo víbora" and also the fact that I am a bit more aggressive than before.
That, combined with the fact that I consider myself a solid player on the left side, gives me an advantage to win a few more points and become more dangerous.”
With Iñigo, we have been playing together for over a year, that's a lot in the padel
We finished last year, with Iñigo, on a very good note, with very good feelings. This summer we worked a lot and we really gave our all to start the year well, and I think that was essential.
We took a short break, but we dedicated the summer to training to be in the best possible condition for this second part of the year. With my partner Iñigo, we have been playing together for a little over a year now.
It's definitely a long-term relationship, or at least for now, since we've been playing together for a little over a year, which is a long time for a partnership in padel. I think that on both sides we have the idea of continuing together for a long time. However, if we continue to get such good results, it is possible that a higher ranked team will make us an offer.
Maybe a higher-ranked pair could ask for one of us, and in that case we would have to think about how to respond. But, without a doubt, we have great chemistry, on and off the pitch, and that is the key to these good results.”
I have a shrink, and it helps me a lot.
“I work a lot on the mental side with my psychologist, who is excellent. We focus a lot on managing concentration, on how I have to approach matches, and on my ability to maintain high concentration over a long period of time, which is fundamental, as well as on managing difficult moments.
There are many moments in a match where the differences I feel are mainly mental, rather than differences in level of play.
Although it is true that the best players often influence the course of the game in different ways. For example, when you make two or three mistakes or give them a little margin, if you play well and the game is balanced, but you give them three or four balls, they immediately take advantage of it to take the lead in the score.”
Best: Higher concentration
“The mental level, just like the level of play, is quite similar with the top players. The difference is that they are able to maintain a good level of play and high concentration over a long period of time during the match, while we, the players a little lower in the ranking, are sometimes more irregular in this regard.”
