We were treated to the  match of the day  at Roland-Garros. More than 2 hours and 36 minutes of fierce combat, a stunning storyline and a fiery atmosphere to see  Rubio and Ruiz  overthrow  Sanyo Gutierrez and Gonzalo Alfonso  : 6/2 1/6 7/6(5).

A high-intensity fight

The match started strongly with a first set controlled by  Rubio / Ruiz . But opposite,  Sanyo and Alfonso  responded brilliantly with a net 6/1.

The third act was breathless. At 5/4,  Rubio writhes in cramp pain and remains on the ground , raising fears of abandonment. But far from giving up, the Spaniard, almost on one leg, and his partner fought back, saving two match points, pushing until  decisive tie-break , won by a hair's breadth.

A football stadium atmosphere

The victory was celebrated as if in an arena.  Javi Ruiz started a clapping  with a melting crowd, as if it were a football match. A celebration worthy of the intensity of the fight.

Sanyo and Alfonso stopped dead in their tracks

For  Sanyo and Alfonso , the disappointment is immense. After their big victory in the previous round against Di Nenno and Augsburger (TS7), they seemed to be on the right track, but ended up giving in at the end of the suspense against a team that seemed more within their reach.

First quarter of the season for Rubio / Ruiz

Thanks to this success,  Rubio and Ruiz reach their first quarterfinal of the season , where they will challenge  Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas . Already  360 points collected , well above their best score to date (90). A real breath of fresh air for this duo who are smiling again in the biggest European Major.
