When for his FIP Promises Paris by WMEthe former Argentinian player Hernán “Bebe” Auguste, a historical figure in world padel, agreed to humorously address a question that many still ask themselves: Why is he nicknamed “Bebe”?

The origin of the nickname “Bebe”

Hernán Auguste explained the origin of this nickname which has become a true identity:

“When I was little, I played tennis at my club in Buenos Aires. I moved up a category because I was winning everything, but when I started losing to the older players, I often cried. People would say, ‘He’s a baby!’ And it stuck. Today, everyone calls me Bebe, even in my family!”

This nickname, which has remained with him since childhood, now accompanies one of the the most respected pioneers of world padel.

An exceptional career on the slopes

Before entering the legend of padel, Baby auguste initially evolved in the tennis, even competing in a few ATP tournaments. In 1991, he chose to devote himself entirely to padel, at a time when the sport was experiencing a real boom in Argentina.

Between 1992 and 1996, he shone alongside Mariano Lasaiguesreaching in particular the Final of the 1994 World Pairs Championship and winning the world team title in 1996.
Later, he partnered with Alejandro Lasaigueswith whom he becomes number 1 on the Argentinian professional circuit in 1997 and 1998, at a time when Argentinian padel dominated the world.

In 1999, Auguste moved to Spain to pursue his international career. The following year, he partnered with Juan Martín Díaz Together, they win the 2000 World Pairs Championship and world team title, a historic achievement.
In 2001, the Díaz–Auguste duo established themselves as the best pair in the world, before Díaz joined Fernando Belasteguín in 2002.

Over the years, Auguste has enjoyed a string of successes with big names like Cristian Gutiérrez, Gaby Reca ou Matías Díazwinning a total six world championship titles (in teams and pairs combined). He ended his career in 2012, after more than 20 years at the highest level.

From player to ambassador of world padel

After his retirement from sports, Hernán “Bebe” Auguste remains an essential figure in the international development of padel.
Between 2014 and 2021he holds the position of Director of Expansion World Padel Tourcontributing to the establishment of the circuit in more than 15 countries.

Baby auguste now devotes his energy to development of padel among young people, through its commitment with WME, partner of the FIP Promises Paris.
