Alejandro Ruiz Granados, says Alex Ruiz or Captain America, is a player of padel Spanish born in Malaga, left-handed and therefore playing on the right. Today, he is in 14th place in the FIP rankings.

Alex Ruiz plays in the middle of padel professional with a very specific particularity: he suffers from a 1 type diabetes since the age of ten. However, despite his illness, he is among the best players in the world. A look back at the career of a player like no other.

From tennis to padel, despite his illness

Alex Ruiz was born on 12th June 1994 in Málaga. As a child, he does not immediately start with padel. Indeed, he takes his first steps in tennis. Little by little, he finally decides to change his tennis racket for a pala padel et love at first sight is almost immediate.

However, when he was only ten years old, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, the most common diabetes in children and adolescents. With this diagnosis, the doctors tell him that he will not be able to never play sports at a high level...a statement that Alex Ruiz has always wanted to undermine, even today.

He made his first appearances on the Padel Pro Tour (ancestor of World Padel Tour) at just 15 years old. Two years later, he managed to devote himself fully to the circuit.

His debut in the big leagues

Captain America enjoyed success very quickly: under-16 world champion with David Garcia Camposthen under-18 world champion, next to Matías Marina. It is with the latter that he begins to make a name for himself on the circuit of World Padel Tour.

With Matí, whom he always described as “the ideal partner", he win his first two titles in Challenger : in Cordoba in 2015 and Lisbon in 2016.

Subsequently, he connects the partners a bit: Seba Nerone et Agustín Gómez Silingo, which will provide him with a rich sporting experience allowing him to mature as a player. Then he will play alongside Martín Sánchez Piñeiro et Pablo Lijó before THE phone call… that of Franco Stupaczuk.

The iconic Ruiz / Stupaczuk pair

The Ruiz / Stupaczuk pair are among the best duos of 2021, finishing the season in fourth place in the rankings. Together, the Argentinian and the Andalusian find themselves in the last rounds of the final tables and win two titles together : Cagliari face Paquito Navarro et Martin Di Nenno et Mexico, facing this same pair.

The Stupa / Captain America pair also lost three finals this same season, against Fernando Belasteguin and Sanyo Gutierrez in Madrid, Juan Lebron and Alejandro Galan in Alicante, and Martin Di Nenno and Paquito Navarro in Cordoba.

That same year, Alex even became world team champion, with Spain, during the Championnat du monde played in Qatar.

However, at the start of 2022, following an obvious lack of results, the ax fell and Stupa and Ale separate. For Andalusian is a bit like the end of an era and the beginning of complicated times.

Despite everything, a year later, Alex Ruiz received an offer to play alongside Juan Tello. A complicated separation for Ruiz and Gonzalez but which is necessary for both players. However, once again, no title for Tello / Ruiz, and even only one final played…The pair split in early 2024 whenThe cat receives an offer from Fernando Belasteguin.

Once again, the Ruiz / Gonzalez pair reappears for a version 2.0. Both players have, for now, reached the final during Bordeaux P2.

At the start of the season, Alex Ruiz is experiencing some difficulties and this is reflected in his game. He even admitted it several times in an interview. It now remains to be seen whether 30 , Captain America will succeed in raising its level further.

Gwenaelle Souyri

It was his brother who one day told him to accompany him on a track. padel, since then, Gwenaëlle has never left the court. Except when it comes to going to watch the broadcast of Padel Magazine, World Padel Tour… or Premier Padel…or the French Championships. In short, she is a fan of this sport.
