À 31 years, Matías Marina begins a new chapter in his career in professional padel by becoming Mike Yanguas' coach. A former great hope of the circuit, the Argentinian had to put an early end to his playing career due to recurring knee injuries. Today, he is putting his experience and know-how at the service of the younger generations, and in particular of Yanguas.

A talent broken by injuries

Born in Mar del Plata man, Matías Marina has long been considered one of the greatest promises of Argentine padel. From the youth categories, he stands out for his talent and intelligence of play. At only 18 years, he entered the professional circuit and began to play alongside recognized players such as Álex Ruiz, Willy Lahoz, Miguel Lamperti and Gonzalo Rubio.

En 2015, he wins his first title World Padel Tour Challenger à Córdoba, associated to Álex Ruiz. This success confirms his full potential and suggests a bright future. He followed this up with other notable performances, including a title at Lisbon and a victory in Sweden with Javier Concepción.

However, Marina's trajectory was abruptly slowed by injuries. From 2018, he began to experience recurring pain in his knees. After three operations and years of rehabilitation, he attempted a comeback in 2021, but his body was no longer able to cope. In June 2021, just 28 years, he announces his retirement from the professional circuit:

"After 13 years on the circuit, I am forced to say goodbye earlier than expected. I have tried everything, I have worked for months off the field to see if my condition would improve, but my knees no longer respond."

A return to the circuit as a coach

Although Matías Marina had to give up the competition, he never considered leaving the world of padel. Passionate about this sport, he had already expressed his wish to pass on his experience to young talents:

"I want to continue being involved in padel. I have learned so much from the best coaches and players that I would like to help the new generation in turn."

En 2025, his wish comes true as he takes charge mike yanguas, one of the rising players on the current scene. At just 22 years, Yanguas has already shown enormous potential on the professional circuit.

With Marina by his side, he could take a new step and aim the tops of the world ranking.

Matías Marina's future in coaching

By becoming the coach of mike yanguas, Matías Marina begins a new adventure that could well be the beginning of a long career on the benches of professional padel. With his technical background and experience, he could become one of the most respected coaches on the circuit in the years to come.

If he manages to help Yanguas to reach the heights, there is no doubt that other players will call on him to benefit from his expertise. A natural reconversion for a player who, despite a thwarted destiny, remains deeply rooted in the world of padel.

Benjamin Dupouy

I discovered padel directly during a tournament, and frankly, I didn't really like it at first. But the second time, it was love at first sight, and since then, I haven't missed a single match. I'm even ready to stay up until 3am to watch a final of Premier Padel !
