As we go to press, 3 of the 4 quarter-finals have given their verdict in the men's category: the only thing missing is the one that currently pits Cardona/Navarro against Chingotto/Galan. The fact remains that the day was rich...
Coello/Tapia easy against Ruiz/Garrido
No cloud in the sky of number one. Faced with Alex Ruiz and Javi Garrido, two players who announced their separation this week, Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello delivered today a part solid in order to win 6/3 6/1. 4 break points converted (none for their opponents), 41 winning points (against 31) and 15 unforced errors (22 for their opponents): the copy is up to standard of the recent winners of Madrid.
Yanguas/Stupaczuk in three tight sets against Tello/Belasteguin
The match between Miguel Yanguas / Franco Stupaczuk and Juan Tello / Fernando Belasteguin was expectedThere are several reasons for this, starting with the fact that any performance by King Bela deserves attention because the "boss" lives his last weeks of career. It was then necessary to see in what way Tello/Belasteguin, victorious in their first two matches after their disappointment in Madrid last week, would manage to maintain harmony between them. It was finally necessary to observe the Yanguas/Stupa game level, whose poor performance in the quarter-finals in Madrid against Esbri/Bergamini could have been worrying.
In this part, Stupa and “Mike” draw the first oness. More powerful than their opponents, they pocket the first set 6/2. But Tello/Bela do not give up and the game is balanced in the second set. At 3/3, the seventh set is the moment that Juan Tello and Fernando Belasteguin choose to harden their defenses and heal their transitions : break! The next game is fiercely contested. "El Gato" deploys all his power in order to snatch the second set (6/4).
Who will seize their chance in the third? The match does not remain indecisive for long and the two teams hold their ground. At 3/2, the break is achieved by Yanguas/Stupaczuk after an arbitration decision that both Bela and Tello are contestingThey will not recover and after a service game won by white, Yanguas and Stupaszuk conclude 6/3 and go to the semi-final.
Chozas/Augsburger bends Nieto/Sanz
We told you about it earlier today, and for good reason: it was without a doubt one of the great shocks of these quarter-finals. Facing the seeded 8 composed of Jon Sanz and Cocki Nieto, the Argentinians Alex Chozas and Leandro Ausgburger (Noted conquerors of Lebron/Di Nenno in the previous round) were they going to continue their momentum ?
The first set of this recently created pair would give a hint of a trend. Won 6/3 by Nieto/Sanz, it saw the latter impose themselves in the game of breaks / unbreaks, following in particular some imprecisions by Chozas/Augsburger. Stung to the quick, the Argentinians were not going to be long in reacting and showing their power. Leading 5/2 in the second set, they were however going to be caught out following in particular a few well-felt counter-smashes de Nieto/Sanz. At 5/5, the match was balanced and Chozas had a hard time winning his serve. The tie-break was however assured, during which Chozas/Augsburger finally found the balance between patience, consistency and power which had been missing until then. Third set then!
Starting this last chapter with full throttle, the Argentinians immediately made the break and pulled away 3/1. Now their grip on the match, they were not safe, however, as Chozas' service game would show to conclude the game. Smash then vibora missed by Augsburger, new volley from the same Leo: 15-40, Two equalizers for the Spanish ! It was at this moment that Chozas made the powder : laser vibra, winning backhand volley, new mammoth smash to get a match point. This time, Leo Augsburger did not weaken and sent a smash missile into Cocki Nieto's feet: " point, set and part ! "
Tomorrow, Alex Chozas and Leandro Ausgburger will once again measure themselves against the current kings of the circuit, Tapia and Coello. As for Nieto/Sanz, they should be opposed to Chingotto/Galan, who leads against Cardina/Navarro as we finalize this post.
