It is August 3, 2023. Earthquake in the padel world : Alejandra Salazar et Gemma Triay announce their separation. More than two years after the start of their collaboration, the two players decided to separate. A choice that emanates from the Menorquin, who speaks on the microphone of Marca "I wasn't happy about continuing with Ale".

This separation sparks a lively controversy to the fans. Many people believe that Gemma Triay is not being fair to her former partner, who is returning from several months of absence due to an elbow injury, which she also had to have operated on.

Now, it’s been a year to the day since the former world number 1s left each other. A question now arises: what consequences of this separation for the two players?

Gemma Triay: from Ortega to Fernandez, successful associations

Even before the split with Alejandra Salazar was official, Gemma Triay was already playing with Marta Ortega. They even managed to win the Italy Major, becoming the first players to win a title on the circuit Premier Padel. Together, they will go through the finals and semi-finals – often coming up against Brea / Gonzalez – and offer themselves the WPT Minorca Open.

Unfortunately, the mayonnaise seems to have difficulty setting. The lack of titles and a difficult understanding on the field will push these two players to separate, from the start of 2024.

It was then that Gemma Triay surprised everyone by joining forces with the young Claudia fernandez, unknown to most people. From their first tournament together, the tandem shined in Doha, reaching the final, ultimately losing to Josemaria / Sanchez.

Since their association last March, the Triay / Fernandez pair could be summed up by these figures:

  • 2 tracks in Santiago de Chile and Bordeaux.
  • 4 endings in Doha, Brussels, Asuncion and Malaga.
  • 5 semi-finals in Puerto Cabello, Seville, Mar Del Plata, Rome and Genoa.
  • 1 quarter-final in Acapulco.

A more than honorable half of the season for these two players who are still 14 years apart.

Alejandra Salazar: the waltz of partners

Since her separation from Gemma Triay, Alejandra Salazar has had some difficulty finding a permanent partner. When it was time to return to the circuit (without Gemma), the Madrilenian turned to Sofia Araujo. The Spanish-Portuguese pair obtained some good results, but failed to win any titles. At the end of 2023, they decide to separate.

At the start of 2024, she announces her new pairing with Tamara Icardo. A generally convincing duo but still missing that little something extra to hope to win a title. The results are good but still not up to par with Salazar's career.

Add to this the injuries to Tamara Icardo, which push Ale Salazar to move towards other partners. She will notably share the track with Carmen Goenaga et Veronica Virseda…to finally to be registered in Madrid alongside Jessica Castello. For now, we still don't know if Ale Salazar will play again with Tamara Icardo.

Ale Salazar Tamara Icardo

Neither player can boast the same success they had when they were together. However, Gemma Triay seems to have managed the separation better as his former partner, Alejandra Salazar.

Today, the two Spaniards have taken very different paths and the hope of one day seeing them evolve together side by side seems completely dashed.

Gwenaelle Souyri

It was her brother who one day told her to accompany him to a padel court, since then, Gwenaëlle has never left the court. Except when it comes to going to watch the retransmission of Padel Magazine, World Padel Tour… or Premier Padel…or the French Championships. In short, she is a fan of this sport.
