With nearly 30 million practitioners in 2024, padel continues its expansion to the four corners of the globe. But do you know its origins, its history? Total Padel reveals seven anecdotes about the genesis of this sport.

1) The padel was born in Mexico

Spain and Argentina are undoubtedly the two largest nations in the world. padel. And yet, the history of the discipline began in Acapulco, in 1969, in the garden of the wealthy Enrique Corcuera.

A big tennis fan, the Mexican wants to build a court but is faced with a lack of space. Never mind: he makes a smaller court (20x10m) surrounded by three-meter walls, so as not to lose the balls. History is in progress. Half a century later, the world's best players visited his hometown through Premier Padel (2023 and 2024).

2) In Marbella, the first courts with mesh

Corcuera's new hobby intrigues even his closest friends, starting with Alfonso de Hohenlohe-Langenburg. Seduced by this activity, the Spaniard imported the idea to Europe and designed the first two tracks of padel at the Hotel Club Marbella, in 1970. For the first time, the grounds did not have walls but rather side fences. It is this particularity that will convince Julio Menditeguy, a member of the club, to introduce the padel in 1975 in Argentina.

3) The very first palas were made of wood

Snowshoes padel have undergone rapid development. At the time, they were made of wood and the game was different: there was more emphasis on exchanges, everything went slower. Today, fiberglass and carbon have revolutionized the industry and palas are each more versatile than the other.

The first rules of padel were issued by Enrique Corcuera's wife, Viviana, crowned Miss Argentina in 1964. She would have given him this charter as a... birthday present.

The first world championship was held in Seville in 1992, a year after the founding of the International Federation of Padel. Argentina started with a hat-trick (1992, 1994, 1996) before losing in the final against Spain in Mar del Plata (1998). Since that date, the two countries have constantly competed for the title, but the Argentinians (11 crowns) are well ahead of the Spaniards (4)…

6) Enrique Corcuera's short no longer exists

Viviana Corcuera sold the Acapulco house following the death of her husband in 1999. The new owners demolished the track padel to build… a large swimming pool. No need to search: the first field of history belongs to the past.

Le Padel Pro Tour (2005) was the first professional tournament circuit in the world, thanks to an agreement between the Asociación de Jugadores Profesionales de Pádel (AJPP) and the Asociación Femenina Española de Pádel (AFEP). Little publicized, it was replaced in 2013 by the WPT, which established itself as the international reference until its acquisition by Premier Padel.

It was through his father that Auxence discovered the padel, six years earlier. Today, he follows the international circuit with passion and teases the pala in his training club, Toulouse Padel Club.
