At only 17 years, Timeo Fonteny celebrated his first steps within the French team during the Padel World Championships in Doha. Thanks to his notable victories on the French circuit, notably at P1500 from Bandol In July, and in his few international appearances, the young player caught the attention of the coach Pablo AymaThe latter chose to trust him to represent France during the 2024 Worlds.

Despite his young age and his still limited experience, Timéo, trained at the Club du Mas in Perpignan, did not stay on the bench. He was a central element of the team by Pablo Ayma, playing all the matches! With Thomas Leygue, he is one of only two players on the team to have played in every game, even if they have not always played together.

A promising start for Mouginois

Native Mougins and classified 292rd player in the world, Timéo was thrown straight in at the deep end, starting in the Blues' first match, alongside Johan Bergeron against Uruguay. This first match ended with a clear victory, 6 / 3 6 / 0, which strengthened Timéo's confidence and confirmed his potential in the eyes of Pablo Ayma.

Pablo Ayma also said: “Yesterday was the debut of Timéo Fonteny, who played very well. He may have started a little nervous, but thanks to the experience of Johan, who is in excellent form, he managed to relax and delivered a great match.”

Undisputed holder, Vanbauce a little further back

Strengthened by this first victory, Fonteny was brought back to each meeting, becoming a pillar of the French team. Thomas Vanbauce, for his part, only played two matches during this competition. Timéo, for his part, won four of the six matches he played.

However, he had to bow out to Italy in his match against Ari Patiniotis et Facundo Dominguez, two players in the world's top 60. Alongside Johan Bergeron, the step proved too high against these experienced opponents on the international circuit.

Against the Brazil, with Thomas Leygue as a partner, Timéo also lost against the formidable Campagnolo/Julianoti, an unsurprising defeat given the quality of the opponents.

Pablo Ayma's trusted player

A complete player with strong offensive qualities, Timéo has established himself as a element of trust within the French team. Despite two defeats, including one against Italy, which could have allowed Les Bleus to reach the semi-finals, Timéo responded and gained experience against top world-class players.

At only 17 years, Timeo Fonteny is already establishing himself as a major hope for French padel. He is expected to gain momentum on the international scene.

For the rest, Timéo moves away somewhat from his long-time partner, Yoan Boronad, to explore international projectsThey will continue to play together for French tournaments, but Timéo will also participate in international competitions, notably in the FIP Star in Mauritius from November 12, in the company of Maxime Joris.

Benjamin Dupouy

I discovered padel directly during a tournament, and frankly, I didn't really like it at first. But the second time, it was love at first sight, and since then, I haven't missed a single match. I'm even ready to stay up until 3am to watch a final of Premier Padel !
