As the competition ended on Sunday we can say that this World Padel Tour Alicante 2021 has plenty of surprises in store for us. And as proof, we were able to see a great spectacle, unplanned eliminations and surprising qualifications!

To come back to this tournament week, we come back to the performances that impressed us, and those that disappointed us!

Tops

We start with the pairs who provided this week.

In the men

For the gentlemen, first congratulations to Miguel Lamperti et Arturo Coello who have managed to hoist a second time in a row in the semi-final. We will obviously remember this Exceptional match against Pablo Lima and Agustin Tapia in quarter. After releasing Navarro / Di Nenno in Madrid, this duo still eliminates one of the first four seeds and shows that they will have to be counted on this season!

Miguelito and Arturo were finally dominated in the semi-finals by another team that we put in the tops:  Alex Ruiz et Franco Stupaczuk ! Impressive in the quarter and semi-finals, Captain America and El Quandño have managed to access their second final in a row !

Unfortunately for them, they came across a revengeful and motivating partner, THE Top pair of this tournament: Ale Galan and Juan Lebron ! In the final the numbers 1 left no chance for the very fit Ruiz and Stupa, winning 6-0 / 6-4 and thus winning their first title. In the previous round they had also crushed Juan Tello and Federico Chingotto! The numbers 1 were unplayable this week in slower conditions than in Madrid ...

In addition, you should know that this coronation has a very special touch for the Spaniards because earlier in the week Alejandro galan lost his uncle. The Madrilenian was very solid on the pitch despite the sadness, proof of his foolproof mentality. and wanted to dedicate this victory to him.

We will add in the Top young people Javi Leal and Miguel Semmler, who started in preprevias and won six games to advance to the sixteenth, a first for only 17-year-old Javi! Beaten in three sets by Uri Botello and Javi Ruiz, this young pair will be one to watch.

Finally, let us also salute the performance ofAris Patiniotis and Jon Sanz, who started in previas and went until the round of 5 where they lost in straight sets hung against Bela and Sanyo: 7/4 6/XNUMX.

At the girls

For both ladies and gentlemen, it is obviously on the side of bet number 1 in the standings that our gaze turns. Indeed, Gemma Triay et Alejandra Salazar recovered their crown during this last WPT.
The players coached by Rodrigo Ovide will have achieved an exceptional tournament, not losing a set, with a 6/0 6/1 victory in the final against  Paula Josemaria and Ari Sanchez. Sensational !

The 100% pair Head Padel, despite his heavy defeat in the final, also deserves his place in this Top. After their title acquired in Madrid, Paula and Ari, still present in the final, have again convinced with in particular a new victory against Sainz / Gonzalez! They show that we will have to rely on them this year!

We also want to salute the journey of the pair Aranzazu Osoro - Victoria Iglesias who managed to climb to the semi final. They have once again eliminated the Martas and have gleaned valuable points in the race for the Master Finale!

Another duo that deserves to be mentioned is the one composed of Barbara Las Heras and Carla Mesa. Indeed, Jorge de Benito's players managed to reach the quarter-finals, notably with an impressive victory in the round of 7 against the number 6 seed, Eli Amatriain / Sofia Araujo: 3/6 4/XNUMX!

We will also discuss Sandra Bellver and Carla Jensen, who crossed the previas then won their sixteenth to reach the round of 15. A first for the young Jensen, XNUMX!

 The Flops

Now it's time for the pairs who struggled in Alicante.

In the men

Maxi Sanchez forehand volley WPT

We obviously think first of the duo Maxi Sanchez - Lucho Capra. The Argentines who were making their first tournament together fell in the first round against Sergio Alba and Francisco Gil Morales. A huge match of more than three hours which will have crowned the underdogs: 6 -7 (5) / 7-6 (4) / 5-7. Already eliminated in the first round with different partners, Sanchez and Capra are definitely struggling at the start of the season. Their former partners, Pablo Lijo and Adrian Allemandi, did not do much better, with a loss also in three sets in the first round, against Diego Fuster and Gonzalo Rubio!

The pair Javier Garrido/Juan Cruz Belluati was also disappointed. Eliminated in the Round of 1 against Sanz and Patiniotis who had three games in their legs, the Spaniard and Argentina did not confirm the beautiful things seen in Madrid. Remember that in the Spanish capital, they bowed 16/6 7/6 against Lebron and Galan.

In the ladies

Eli Amatriain backhand baseline wpt

The first pair that comes to mind is the one made up ofEli Amatriain and Sofia Araujo, who lost to Carla Mesa and Barbara Las Heras in the first round of the tournament: 6-3 / 6-4. Eli and Sofia failed to display their best level of play against the underdogs. A complicated start to the season for Manu Martin's players, who lost in 1 / 8th in Madrid against Delfi Brea and Tamara Icardo.

The second flop in the female category is obviously that of Marta Ortega and Marta Marrero. Those who teamed up during last season to regain the top are struggling at the start of the season. After an elimination in 1 / 8th in Madrid against Osoro / Iglesias, the number 3 seed lost again against the same pair. Do the players coached by Juanma Rodriguez just have a problem with this particular pair? Difficult to know but in any case their start to the season is not up to their status.

Finally, let's not forget the pair Navarro - Reiter, seed number 8, who suffered the law of the pair number 19, Esther Carnicero - Raquel Piltcher, from the round of 2. A 6-4 / 6-XNUMX defeat for the veterans who had already lost in the sixteenth in Madrid. The return from injury looks more complicated than expected for Cette Reiter.
