The second men's semi-final of the Beautiful FIP Star Plan has just ended in Mauritius. The surprise is big: the French pair, Timeo Fonteny et Max Joris, seeded number 4, eliminated the tournament favorites, Aitor Garcia / Miguel Solbes, seeded number 1. The journalist, Mario Cordero, interviewed the heroes of this encounter.
Journalist : 4 break points for you, 2 breaks achieved, one in each set. On the other side, 12 break points for your opponents, but only one break achieved. Did you win this match thanks to experience against two players aged 30 and 36?
Timeo Fonteny : We are very happy because we were able to impose our game against players who are in the world top 100. At the important moments, we knew how to "carry our balls" to go and get the decisive points. It paid off, since we won in 3 sets.
Journalist : After such a victory, how do you feel? Max, you have already beaten players from the top 100 with Thomas Vanbauce, but this is a semi-final to reach the final. Doesn't your arm shake on par 3s at the end of the match?
Max Joris : We try to “put our brains to rest” as much as possible to stay focused. But it’s true that we’re very happy, especially for a first association with Timéo. We didn’t expect such a good result. Now, we hope to do as well in the final to go for the title.
Journalist : In the final, you will face two other players from the top 100, including Thomas Leygue, French number 1, with whom you shared the French team. What do you expect from this match?
Timeo Fonteny : This is my first final in such an important tournament. Facing Thomas makes us want to play even more. We know him well, as well as his partner (Piotto). We know what to expect. We're going to give it our all!
Journalist : On your bench, there was Yannick Maurel, Timéo's coach. Max, it was a first for you with him. What did he bring?
Max Joris : Honestly, it was great! When Timéo suggested having Yannick on the bench, I was up for it. He was able to see things that you don't always notice when playing, while providing essential moral support. This victory is also thanks to him.
Journalist : Yannick, before this match, what was your speech and your expectations for this first association?
Yannick Maurel : We were waiting to see what would happen. The goal is always to go as far as possible, or even win. We had identified a few points in our opponents and adjusted our strategy according to the playing conditions and their form. Now, on to the final!
Journalist : Have you already prepared a plan against the finalist teams?
Yannick Maurel : Not yet, but I'll get to it soon. The advantage is that the guys know their future opponents.
The pair Fonteny/Joris, 17 and 23 years old respectively, will face this afternoon Thomas Legue and his partner Ignacio Piotti. A final to follow live on Padel Magazine. Don't miss it!
