Jessica Ginier and Carla Touly brilliantly made it through the first round of the Cupra FIP Finals in Bourg-en-Bresse, winning 6-2, 6-4 against two players ranked in the world top 70. After this solid victory, the two French players spoke about their impressions and of course about the future match that awaits them…
Decisive break points
Do you know how many break points you saved during this match?
Jessica Ginier: Twelve, right? And they never managed to break us! Honestly, we didn't ask ourselves too many questions. We knew we had to go get those points, because they weren't going to give them to us. So much the better if the stats are good, but the important thing is that we played a solid match against very serious opponents. We're really happy.
Carla's energy restored
Carla, compared to your last tournament in Mauritius, where it seemed complicated, today you were much more in shape, more aggressive. How do you explain this difference?
Carla Touly: It's true that in Mauritius, it was difficult because of the travel and the accumulated fatigue. Here, I felt good, especially on our service games. The stats show that we were solid, and that gives confidence.
Performance on decisive points
There were six decisive points in the match. Do you know how many you won?
Carla Touly: Yes, definitely! This victory feels really good. We have played several matches at this level this year, but often lost in tight scenarios. Now, it is huge to be able to conclude in two sets without letting the match turn against us.
A well thought out strategy
Jess, do you have a specific strategy in place for this match?
Jessica Ginier: We simply said to ourselves that we had to play our game: be aggressive without rushing, and know how to slow down when necessary. Our opponents like rhythm, so we tried to break it when necessary. We were able to manage the match from start to finish, and that was nice.
Carla's Season Review
Carla, what is your assessment of your season, and what are your expectations for 2025?
Carla Touly: This season has been full of ups and downs, especially around the Worlds where I was enjoying myself less and less. But after a short break recently, I found the desire to play and train again. For 2025, I haven't thought about my plans or my future partner yet. We'll see after the tournament.
Jessica's plans for 2025
Jess, do you think you will continue playing next season?
Jessica Ginier: Yes, although it will probably be less intensive. I love padel too much to stop, but I have to balance it with my family and work life. As long as I'm in shape, I'll continue.
Next match and outlook
Carla Touly: We will face Catarina Nogueira and Sara Ruiz. I have revenge to take on Noguera after a defeat at the World Championships with Léa.
