The wall is your friend ... how to play with double walls?

4th step: turn with the ball (part 1)

In previous articles we saw together how to play with the back wall, the side wall and the double walls. Now we will discuss in which case we must turn with the ball.

Rotation is mainly used in the following cases:

1) to play the ball in a much more comfortable position

2) to try to keep the basic position at best

3) when it is not possible to anticipate the trajectory of the ball (double wall which opens or a double wall which closes?).

In this article, we will talk about a very specific type of ball where it is important to rotate to play the ball in the optimal conditions. It comes from your diagonal, with a deep rebound, and goes along your leg near the center of the court. If you do not turn on this ball, you will play it either in a very uncomfortable position being trapped by the side wall (see the video) or move laterally towards the center to avoid the ball and then run behind it with a lot of delay ...

For the player on the left (see video)

Identify the type of ball: it is the ball which arrives crossed from your diagonal and will follow your right leg when you are in the baseline position. You will turn with it to play it with your backhand (not in forehand).

For the right player

Identify the type of ball: it is the ball which arrives crossed from your diagonal and will follow your left leg when you are in the baseline position. You will turn to play with your forehand (not backhand).

What do you do when you see this ball coming in and have identified it as described above?

1) You have to arm / prepare your shot and always keep your eyes on the ball.

2) You will then follow the trajectory of the ball, get closer to the back wall and then wait for the ball to pass you forward to hit it in front of you.

The most frequent errors:

- turn on the wrong side and have the ball going on your back. For that, it is very important never to leave the ball of the eyes which will allow you to turn in the good sense. (from right to left for the player on the left and from left to right for the player on the right).

- turn on the spot and not approach the back wall. As a result, it is very likely that the player's position will be too far forward and that he will have the ball hitting plane behind him and not in front. Also, it is important to follow the “V” of the trajectory of the ball by small steps and to approach the back window to always be in position to strike in front of you when exiting the window.

By turning, you will see that you will be immediately placed for the next ball.

On the other hand, if you turn several times in a row, you run the risk of having your head spinning… So do not overdo it, but use on adequate balls!

It's your turn !
