The wall is your friend ... How to play with double walls?

4th step: turn with the ball (part 2)

In the previous article we mentioned the rotation to avoid ending up to hit the ball in a very uncomfortable position that is to say glued to the side wall.

In this article we will study the reverse rotation on the double walls that open allowing us to:

  • keep the basic position
  • being able to play the double walls when playing a shorter ball just before or when returning from a net position.

In which cases is rotation mainly used on double opening walls? (see diagrams)

a) On a ball that comes diagonally with a wide angle (bouncing off the corner)

Instead of making a lateral move towards the center for the left-leaning player and knocking on the back or for the right-handed player to strike in forehand, it is best to stay on his base position and turn with the ball following his trajectory (from left to right for the left player and from right to left for the right player), to be ready for the next move by being ideally placed on the base position after turning and hitting.

If you do not turn and apply the lateral displacement (as described in the first article on the double walls) you will have to use the lateral displacement very fast and over a long distance which will excentrera much of your position of based…. And redo the path in the opposite direction to resume your basic position).

b) When the player has just hit a shorter ball or when he follows a lob when returning from the net, then he is led to play a double wall open in stride.

The player is obliged to turn with the ball because he is out of his base position of the baseline and it is simply physically impossible for him in time and on the move to take the ball in lateral displacement.

What do you do when you see this ball coming in and have identified it as described above?

1) You have to arm / prepare your shot and always keep your eyes on the ball.

2) You will then follow the trajectory of the ball, get closer to the back wall and then wait for the ball to pass you forward to hit it in front of you.

Once again you have to use the rotation on very specific very specific balls that you will have identified. Indeed, if you chain the rotations you will quickly feel dizzy! Use wisely.

You shift sideways or turn with the ball…. ? What to do ?

The more you play or practice with the double panes, the sooner you will understand and find the balls on which it will be more efficient to turn with.

It's your turn !
