In the quarter-finals of the P1 in Milan, the world number 1s faced the Spanish pair seeded number 5, P. Cardona / F. Navarro. A match that seemed safe on paper for the unbeaten team in 42 games. However, the course of the match proved quite the opposite.
Coello and Tapia secured their 43rd consecutive victory, but this performance was marked by a very laborious encounter against their Spanish opponents. Direct errors, blocked smashes, missed bandejas… The content of this match is to be forgotten for the favorite pair, who even conceded the second set.
A closed-faced Tapia, who is however accustomed to a faultless game, showed quite the opposite this afternoon. We felt them blunted, badly positioned, struggling to find their rhythm. It was a real fight.
The Cardona/Navarro pair have no reason to be ashamed of their performance. They managed to rough up the world leaders, unbeaten in 42 matches. By countering Coello's smashes and forcing their opponents to play one more ball, they were able to make them doubt. The number 1s had to give it their all to snatch victory.
At the end of the match, the Spaniards, less lucid, complicated their task by conceding avoidable direct errors. These errors tipped the match in favor of Tapia and Coello, who had to fight until the last point.
A match point was enough for them to extend their incredible 43-match unbeaten run. Despite the lackluster performance, Coello remained positive after the match: "I'm happy, but it's true that it was a very difficult game. The main thing is done. I hope to play better in the next game."
Victorious in the end, they did well, but this performance does not bode well as the Premier Padel Master Final. Their next meeting will be on Saturday for the semi-finals against the Spanish pair J. Gonzalez/E. Alonso. The match is to be followed not before 13 p.m. (French time).
I took a bubble in my first tournament Padel. Since then, it has become a passion,
with one goal: to never again finish a game without scoring a goal. This sport is
now an integral part of my life, to the point of leaving feathers there. I often burn myself
elbows trying to catch all the balls. "A true love story."
