The lob: “the primordial blow”

Padel Magazine – The lob is one of the shots, see the most used shot in padel. If there is indeed a stroke to master padel, It's This one !

A good player is one who is able to put 10 lobes in the same place without unnecessary gesture. It is certainly the most important move of the padel and it is therefore important not to miss it, because without mastering the lob, even if you are gifted, it is a safe bet that you will not emerge victorious.

1) Why the lob?

The lob has an eminently strategic role, but let's take a look at some of these characteristics:

  • The lob may seem easy, but doing it in not very comfortable positions is another pair of sleeves ...
  • This is a blow that saves time and so review his strategy over a point.
  • To swing a pair into a defensive position at a position of attack.
  • Rejects rivals, among other things after a service.

This is the shot that can rock a part, much more than all other shots.

2) How to do a lob of padel ?

We can estimate that it is necessary to master two concepts to lob to perfection:

  • A high lob: Which does not allow opponents to spike the ball.
  • A deep lob: The ball high but without depth will not have the desired effect.

The correct height is about 7 to 8 meters at the level of the net. The higher the lob is achieved, the better, because the ball will have a tendency to hit less against the backcourt.

3) Why achieve such a high lob?

  • To save time and better position yourself.
  • To put in difficulty his rivals especially during a possible smash.
  • A ball in the vertical is more difficult to hit than a ball horizontally.

Warning: A high ball that bounces too much off the back window can allow the opponent to smash or hit hard to deliver later. A blow not too vertically and in the corners is recommended ...

Tactically, a cross lob and so in the corners are often difficult to put back, but it is also necessary to play with the opponents.

For example, lobing the opponent's backhand side can be a good strategy. Thus, lobing in the middle can be a good strategy and thus avoid not only a smash of the opponent, but also to break the angles ...

Tactically, lobing in a very awkward and uncomfortable situation doesn't have to pay off. It is better to try in this case to put back a short and slow ball. Why ? The lob will have a good chance of being badly done… Conclusion: Your opponents will crucify you when you were already not in a good position.

  • The truth is that for me one of the biggest issues with serving is the type of balls I use, which is why I always recommend my students to choose a brand and type of balls from. padel.

  • a video to explain all this, ... see video link (from the 30 em segondes) end of this comment.

-Sanyo Gutierrez (right player at the bottom of the video) draws his rival to the net with a short ball blocked in return for service, ...

-Then he performs a lobe, his partner and him going directly to the net in the direction of Lima blocking all direct attack angles ...

-His rival (Pablo Lima at the top left) not wanting to lose the net tries a bandeja (plateau) approximately 60%, but Gutierrez having followed his Lobe achieves a box pronto (short / short rebound) halfway through the track pushing Lima back to the bottom of the track ...

-Lima too much press to win the point risk a cross shot instead of playing center net or to make a Lobe, ... and thereby loses the point.

Training for this shot, two players crossing ... equipment 1 ball, 15 min without missing (after 7.5 min we change sides (right -------> left) to work on rebounds, steals and lobes from right to left ...

    1 player executes a lobe,
player 2 a bandeja (board) direction player 1
1 player rebound runs in 2 player's feet
    2 player in the middle
player 1 deep steal at the center back of the track, ....

and we start again with a lobe of the player 2, ... 15 min.

technical, tactical, displacement, control, and concentration ... complete exercise !!!

  • There is a lobe, uses more and more, it is the intermediate lobe, ie, the lobe which prevents the opponent of smatcher but of which it can not pass at the risk of seeing the ball die without bouncing on the wall the bottom...
In this case, ... the pair having played this lobe quickly advance the racket in the direction of the player who will try to spike, (but in an uncomfortable position so a slow ball), and intercepts and pushes the ball in the feet the opposing player remains at the net, ... winning the point directly or at least winning the net thus pushing back the opponents in defense ...

    • The intermediate lobe is difficult to achieve ... If we miss it, it is often the end for us ... It is better to make a short ball no?

      • If you miss the short ball it's over for you too, ...,

Control, technique and precision are key words at padel for 90% of the bales.

When you miss a hit you allow the rivals to make the 10% of moves remaining, ie the aggressive moves 5% and 5% definitions

  • It would be nice to have more articles like this one! It is well explained and we understand why the lobe. On the other hand I wondered if it was not necessary rather to make tense bullets in return for service, because it is too difficult the lobe in return. no ?

    • Hi Ali, I invite you to read Ben's comments. It answers your question indirectly.
In return, there are sometimes lobs sometimes bullets. But difficult to give you an exact answer because it will depend on the placement of your opponents, the type of services, placement, your placement, the strategy with your partner, etc.
On the other hand, the article does not mention the intermediary lob, which is certainly the most effective lob, but the most difficult to achieve because it is interesting to be precise. For more info, here too, I invite you to read the comments of Ben Puiss. Have a good day
