WPT Madrid Masters: Araujo/Talavan tames Salazar/Triay

New sensation this Thursday during the WPT Madrid Master. After the elimination yesterday of Tapia and Gutierrez in the men's draw, it is the turn of the seeded 1 in the women's draw to take the door prematurely.

Nothing is going well for the world n°1s Alejandra Salazar and Triay! After their very heavy defeat in the final of the WPT in Stockholm (beaten 6/1 6/1 by Sanchez / Josemaria), they left the WPT Madrid Master in the 1/8th finals.

Sofia Araujo 19th and Marta Talavan Ruiz 22nd

The trembling arm?

Their executioner of the day is the surprising Spanish-Portuguese pair formed by Marta Talavan Ruiz (22nd) and Sofia Araujo (19th). The latter led 7/6 5/2 after 1h45 of the match, when they may have had their arm shaking. Talavan Ruiz served for the game at 5/4, being two points clear. But the world No. 1 then had a burst of pride, returning to 5/5.

We thought that Talavan and Araujo were going to give in, but they held their serve in extremis to lead 6/5 then made another unexpected break and won the second set and the match, after 2:11 of suspense.

A result that plunges Salazar and Triay into doubt and opens a boulevard to Ariana Sanchez and Paula Josemaria (TdS 2), currently full of confidence.

Six punto de oro against one

The match stats are eloquent: while they scored 8 points less than Salazar and Triay, Araujo and Talavan won in straight sets. Much more realistic and effective in key moments, they convert 5 out of 9 break points – against only 4 out of 12 for their opponents. And the results of the “punto de oro” are clear: 6 to 1 in favor of the winners of the day!
