The south of France is very large and we find ourselves facing south today, in Nîmes. Before that, we have to cross several pretty villages lulled by the song of the cicadas and the stories of Pagnol. From Manosque to Nîmes via Orange, here is the stage of the day.
Manosque is inland. This city which we all heard about one day in the novels of Marcel Pagnol, begins its history in Roman times. The travelers took a break and could leave with wine amphorae made on site. Manosque has experienced many upheavals due to illnesses or the passage of the second war. Place of resistance, part of the city was destroyed by the explosion of a stockpile of ammunition. Today the city welcomes tourists who discover the ancient remains still standing, as well as the production of olives.
Orange, city of Vaucluse is located in an agricultural region, at the crossroads of the north-south axis. Well known to the Romans, it was the capital of the Principality of Orange until 1713. Several Roman buildings are listed as World Heritage by Unesco like the Arc de Triomphe or the majestic ancient theater.
Finally our stage ends at Nimes, Roman city which for ten years has become the competitor of its neighbor Montpellier. A city that becomes brighter, expands and becomes ever more attractive. Compulsory passage of Via Domitia, Nîmes is classified “city of art and history” notably for its Tour Magne, its Maison Carrée or its arenas. Located at the entrance of the Camargue, its traditions are well established, based around the bull, horses, rice or even Denim canvas.
