Juan Martin Diaz and Fernando Belasteguin: a love story that lasted 13 years. JMD and Bela won it all together. And yet the pair, sitting in the first place in the world, decided in 2015 to separate.

A rare situation. Seven years after this separation, we try to understand the reflection of these two players who marked the padel .

The decision mainly comes from Bela

There was, from the point of view of the two players, perhaps this need to anticipate a possible conflict and therefore separate before things go wrong. This is what we felt through the interventions of the two players at the time.

But what is less known is that there was another reason on Bela's side: the need to preserve themselves in order to last. Indeed, Fernando tells us in his book that he wanted to change partners to have at his side a teammate capable of covering more ground. Playing with Juan Martin Diaz could eventually become too physical and increase the risk of injury to a player who had already experienced various glitches.

Wear: a triggering factor

Both for Bela and JMD, playing together for 13 years has worn them down. They didn't want to end badly. On this point there was a certain consensus: it was better to part well now than badly later.

The story had started so well. In 2001, it was Juan Martin Diaz, at the time the boss of the padel worldwide alongside Bebe Auguste, who had approached the young Fernando Belasteguin to offer him a collaboration. Bela obviously jumped at the chance.

Bela and JMD debunk the rumors

Bela and JMD will therefore have spent 13 years together at the head of the padel global. These two very demanding players with their partner but especially with themselves, often seemed on the verge of breaking up. Rumors have repeatedly announced the end of their association. Yet the two competitors have always known how to get the best out of each other and go in the same direction.

After their separation, Juan Martin Diaz will continue with Juani Mieres, while Fernando Belasteguin will join forces with another southpaw: the powerful Pablo Lima, for three more years of domination.
